Category hierarchy type explained

Hello,

I am looking into using category hierarchy as a way of assigning attributes to items. We need a way to have an external database fetch information about items depending on the attributes.
However I cannot find any good information about the diffrent category hierarchy types and what the purpose of them is.

To try and explain in a bit more detail:
We have an external database that contains tons of information regarding the items, for example product documentation, instruction manuals and EPD.
We want to be able to connect this database to D365 using attributes that are tied to the items using a Category hierachy.
At this moment the best way to do this we have found is to use either the retail or commerce category hierarchy type. But i would really like to understand what all the category hierarchy types are and how they work.

Best Regards

Edit:
Forgot to mention that this is on FOSCO D365.
The different category hierarchy types are:
Procurement
Sales
Commerce
Commodity
Derived financial
Supplemental retail
Retail channel navigation
Packing material
Common data
Cost management
Traceability

    Hi,

Here are some commonly used category hierarchy types and their explanations:

    1. Product Category Hierarchy: This type is primarily used for organizing items based on their product attributes. It allows you to create a hierarchical structure that represents the product classification in your business, such as product types, brands, or models.

    2. Retail Category Hierarchy: This type is specifically designed for the retail industry. It helps in organizing items based on their retail attributes, such as departments, categories, and subcategories. It allows retailers to manage their inventory and pricing based on the retail taxonomy. For more details: About retail hierarchies | Microsoft Learn.

    3. Commerce Category Hierarchy: Similar to the retail category hierarchy, the commerce category hierarchy is designed for managing items in an e-commerce environment. It enables the categorization of products and helps in navigation and search on the e-commerce website. For more details: Commerce hierarchies - Commerce | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn.

    4. Project Category Hierarchy: This type is used for organizing items based on project attributes. It allows you to structure items related to specific projects, such as phases, tasks, or deliverables. This hierarchy is useful when managing project-based work, tracking costs, and analyzing project performance.

    Best regards,
    Kevin

At this moment the only ones that seems viable is Commerce, Retail channel or Procurement
