Flushing Principles

The Start and End flushing principles will automatically consume materials at the beginning or the end of an operation, correct? Therefore if I needed a material for a production order and I didn't want it to be consumed at all, I would need to use the Manual flushing principle? Could I then set the consumption of that material to zero so it wouldn't be consumed?

As I remember it Manual consumption items can be left alone. We used them in 2009 to make costing work typical for floor stock items that are replenished as needed.

For instance, if I were to use an item such as a tool for a machine as part of the BOM, and that item had a Manual flushing principle, the item wouldn't be consumed in the production order?

When you Start or RaF a production order, if you set 'Automatic BOM consumption' to 'Flushing principle' and set the 'Flushing principle' on the (raw material) item, then AX will not automatically post consumption of the item. It would only do that if a user created a manual picking list.

So the inventory amount for that item would be the same after the production order as it was before?

For example, I would have a BOM with two BOM lines. One line would have an item that is consumed in production, the other line would have an item that isn't consumed. If I were to do the procedure you said above by setting 'Automatic BOM consumption' to 'Flushing principle,' could I have one item consumed and the other not?

You would probably set it to what you need, because a BOM line with 0 qty isn't of much use other then to have a suggested PRODBOM list before you edit it when an order is created. A 0 qty line gives no requirements either.

Input the required quantity, but don't consume it or put a +1 with flushing principle start and a - 1 with end and you'll have a requirement cycle.

Can you change a flushing principle in a production order? If I initially set the flushing principle to be "Start" with +1 would I need to change the flushing principle to "End" at the end of the order with a value of -1? Or can I just set the ending quantity of the item to -1?

The only impact of not issuing the manual flush item is its impact on cost if you are in an average cost system and the manual items have real non trivial costs. In a standard cost system the differences would be expressed as variances.

The cost of the material wouldn't be considered in the cost analysis. The material would be more or less used as a tool for the production order and then be returned to stock after the order is complete. In this case, would the manual flushing principle be the best option?

Note that you might get a message that in a cryptic way sais you haven't consumed (released)  all your items... and need to ignore that fact when posting RAF.
