Don't laugh....

Hi, my situation is as follows, GP v6 and SQL 2000 were installed on a W2K server with 2 partitions, the SQL server was installed on C: and Dynamics was installed on E: (not by me, I am just trying to recreate this)

Anyway the NTOSKRNL.exe got corrupted (10 second brown out) and I had to reinstall the server OS but Server 2003 this time. I renamed the e:\dynamics folder and reinstalled Dynamics to E: (per the PDF under documentation) I made a copy of the Dynamics folder but copied the contents of the old Dynamics folder to it.

I also copied the contents of the original C: drive to another folder on E: in case I need to copy back any specific SQL information etc.

I reinstalled SQL server to c: as before per the PDF.

I created the ODBC entry as specified on the PDF as well and tested the connection successfully.

All the data and tables are on E: they weren't affected at all. The company I am consulting for is DOA without this. I could really use some guidance as to how to import the data/database/tables back so they are talking to each other. In case you haven't noticed I am a SQL neophyte but learn quickly. If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated. I can pick up the phone if it's faster...

    Thanks for the information, I should point out that the server I installed this on has now officially gone belly up. I know that v6 isn't compatible with Server 2008 so I was thinking of running Server 2003 in a virtual machine, has anyone tried this before and found it to be a really bad idea?, I will go from there, either way I am looking at having to install everything from scratch again. I referred to the PDFs in the documentation folder before and I will do so again unless there are any fundamental things I should change, again thanks for all your help and suggestions..

    Hi,

    Whenever I do this, I move the databases FIRST and then do the clean install. Dynamics Utilities will automatically pick up that the system database already exists and do essentially what we would consider an upgrade. You don't need to create the companies again.

    You will need to make sure none of the user logins are already in SQL and then cruise through the user maintenance window. On versions today, it will just ask you to put in a password and save it. Version 6, I don't remember so much.

    I think you could still choose to separate the SQL Login creation from the GP creation back then. Oh, be sure to look at the database users (and get rid of them) as well as the SQL logins.

    I think it is too late for the detach/attach technique here. Hopefully you have backups from before the crash. Richard L. is exactly correct, you need to install GP 6, create the companies using GP Utiliies and then you can do a forced restore over those databases you just created using those backups. If you follow the steps in KB 848449 you should be almost there. The problem you have now is it is too late to capture the SQL logins and to detach the databases.

    So I did perform the basic install of V6 like you mentioned to get the entries correct and then copied over the contents of the old Dnamics folder

    Do I still need to create company DBs if they were backed up previously? not sure I understood about detach/attach below, did you mean to detach the new ones and add the old ones? I will take a look at the commands and then decide if I want to tempt fate or reach out to a SQL expert... :)

    First, before copying the old Dynamics to a new folder, since the OS was reloaded, you need to do a basic install of Dynamics V6 to get registry entries set right.  THEN copy the old Dynamics folder to the new one.

    As for the databases, you need to first create the company databases in the SQL (to get all the pointers correct), then detach the new ones and attach the new ones.  There are DETACH and ATTACH Transact SQL commands to do this and are well documented online.  You might want to get a SQL expert to do this job if you are concerned about your skills.
