There is no single best way; it really depends on your particular situation and requirements.

    Hi Martin,

For example to write a set of items to this external DB which is the best approach(odbc?!?)

A few questions you should consider:

    • Is the database server on-premises or in cloud?
    • It is reachable over internet?
    • If it's on-premises, how will you connect to it?
    • What kind of database it is?
    • How much data will you transfer and how often?
    • What's the acceptable latency?
    • Will it be push or pull model?
    • Do you want to achieve temporal decoupling?
    • Do you want something like distributed transactions?

The database server that i must connect from D365 is on premise , which is the best way to read \write data over it for you?

    (not large volume of data)

Hey, listen to me! It depends on answers on those questions.

For example, let's say you decide to create a direct connection, but later you find that it's impossible because your server isn't reachable from internet or because messages mustn't be lost while the system is down or without internet connection, or you'll find that latency isn't good enough for your purpose... All your investment to that solution would be ruined because you failed to think about requirements and limitations.
