Chrome update making file downloads non usable

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We are currently using Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 Service pack 1.

Due to a recent Chrome browser update (to Version 72.0.3626.81), Chrome now wraps the entire filename – including the file extension – of some downloaded files with the single-quote character. That changes the extension from .xlsx to .xlsx’ which makes the operating system think it’s an unsupported file type.

The interim solution we offered our users is to remove the ' characters from the file extension before opening the file. Use Windows Explorer to rename the file and remove the quotes, then it will open normally with Excel.

We are wondering of there will be a hot fix for this until Chrome releases a fix as Chrome is the supported and widely used browser in our organization.

When fixed could anyone could please post the patch version number (preferably link) so that we can tell IT what patch they require.

As suggested by others, its a known issue, Micoroft has also advised on temporary work around and I think Microsoft is testing or rolling out the fix for online instances. I have noticed some of our online instances now download file fine but not all of them. Its either they are testing or slowly rolling out the fix

Unfortunately we cannot ask all our users to downgrade and/or use other browsers as Chrome is our company's preferred/supported browser.

There is a work around that has worked for some CRM implementations that's posted on forums

    <outboundRules> <rule name="Content-Disposition filename" preCondition="IsSingleQuoteFileName"> <match serverVariable="RESPONSE_Content_Disposition" pattern="(.* filename=)('([^'].+)')(.*)" /> <action type="Rewrite" value="{R:1}"{R:3}"{R:4}" /> </rule> <preConditions> <preCondition name="IsSingleQuoteFileName"> <add input="{RESPONSE_CONTENT_DISPOSITION}" pattern=".* filename='[^'].+'" /> </preCondition> </preConditions> </outboundRules>

but unfortunately this does not work in our setup in all downloads. (it does take care of single quotes in solution downloads and we can open solutions fine) but when we export something to excel there are no single quotes in the file name but when we try to open the file, we get this message and the file is not usable.

"Excel cannot open the file 'filename.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

Please advice if there are any work arounds we can apply at the CRM level (not user work around, i see there is a chrome extension etc but it's not reasonable for us to have all of our users do it)

    Thank you,

    Hi,

Microsoft is aware of this problem now. Temporary use other browsers or downgrade your google chrome version.

    Hi Rekha Bojja,

You will need to use an older version of Google Chrome, or a different internet browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Internet Explorer in the meantime.
