Upgrading to GP2013 using multiple machines

Hi,

I need to upgrade from GP10 to 2013.  This client has a over 70 companies and a lot of data.  And I have to go via GP2010.

A test upgrade from GP10 to 2010 took over three days, and I expect another 3 days for the upgrade to 2013.

I am looking for ways to cut down on this time.  I have thought of a number of workarounds, but it would be ideal if I could simply run the upgrade on multiple clients. Is there a way to allow this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Habib

RE: Upgrading to GP2013 using multiple machines

I have performed GP Upgrades with multiple machines many times.  I have a few clients with 150+ databases.

I found that 6 machines seems to be the optimum.  Any more and the overall upgrade starts to be slower than if you do it sequentially.

    Thanks Lance.

    Harry,

I did read somewhere that there is a version of GP10 that can be directly upgraded to 2013.  We are not on it.

I could apply the service pack to bring it to the "good GP10" or upgrade to 2010.  In either case I would have to go through the GP Utilities/upgrade process.

I would definitely like to sidestep that interim step but I am not sure it is worth the risk  (or the effort to do the research and testing to ensure success).   I can run the upgrade on multiple clients and get it all done in a day and that is good enough.

    Regards

    Habib

    Habib,

If you use virtual machines you can create multiple copies of your environment and improve on Lance's suggestion above. This will spread the database load across other hardware as well. I typically use a virtual environment to perform the trial upgrade, so users can really dig in, train and test prior to cutting over from GP 10 to GP 2013.

Also, if recollection servers, there is a version of GP10, which can convert directly to GP2013.  Applying this Service Pack to GP 10 should dramatically impact the time required to perform this upgrade.

    Hello Habib,

I understand that you are looking for a way to cut down on the upgrade time.  I have seen in the past where users will use multiple instances of GP Utilities to upgrade GP.

What you would want to do first is upgrade your Dynamics database.  Once you have upgraded your Dynamics database proceed to your Companies upgrade section.  Select the first 5 companies (or however many you want to do per GP Instance).  Then launch GP Utilities on a different machine (or it can be a second instance installed on the same machine), log in as the 'sa' account (GP Utilities does not perform any checks for users in GP Utilities, it only performs a check to make sure no users are logged into the GP application itself).  In your second instance of GP Utilities, it will prompt you that Dynamics is at the current version, and you will proceed to the Companies upgrade section.  The five companies that you are upgrading in your first instance will have a lock by them and you will not be able to upgrade them, so you will want to select your next 5 companies in your list and upgrade them.

You can do this for however many instances of GP you have installed.  I would make sure that you have plenty of resources on your SQL Server as well, since you will be upgrading your databases simultaneously which can take a toll on your SQL resources.

In summary you are correct that you can run the upgrade on multiple clients at that same time.

    Thanks!

RE: Upgrading to GP2013 using multiple machines

    Hello Habib

When it comes to Dynamics GP upgrade, the number of companies that a specific site has plays a major role in determining the cost of upgrade in terms of time, it greatly affects the time required because you will have to go sequential and there is no way to upgrade companies in parallel. So simply, if you have 10 companies, it usually means that you need the same time required to upgrade one company (10 times).

A good strategy when it comes to such an upgrade is to take into consideration the peak time and off time, upgrading the key companies first so that the end result is not to have them all down for three days, rather each one could be down for an acceptable time
