Inventory availability in D365 Commerce integrated with AX 2012 R3

Posted on by 40

I have a requirement to use D365 Commerce integrated with AX 2012 R3 (core system for Financials and SC management). How can I make inventory available in D365 Commerce on real time basis so that my B2B portal (connected with D365 Commerce) can show available inventory to customer while placing an order?

At broader level, I think whenever inventory receipt transaction is posted in AX 2012 R3 either through procurement or production and issue transaction is posted against other sales e.g. B2C or back office so inventory adjustment/movement journal needs to be posted automatically in D365 Commerce through integration but what about the inventory transfers within AX 2012 R3 warehouses or other transactions?

Has anyone ever catered such requirement? What could be the best model to achieve such requirement i.e. make inventory available in D365 Commerce from AX 2012 R3 on real time basis so that the same can be shown to customer on B2B portal.

RE: Inventory availability in D365 Commerce integrated with AX 2012 R3

Are you using Dynamics 365 e-commerce for your B2B or it is an external portal integrated with Dynamics 365 Commerce HQ ?

I have worked on a similar project where the customer was a long term AX 2012 R3 but wanted to start the transformation with retail stores first. We managed to integrate AX2012 R3 and D365 Commerce in both directions. However, inventory the variance were there and required frequent manual monitoring and intervention.

If AX2012R3 can be called the single point of truth, system for fulfillment and  your requirement is to just use on-hand data from AX2012R3 data to restrict a customer placing a order if there is no inventory. The best and easiest option will be to build a custom integration to push on-hand data from AX2012R3 to RetailInventAvailability table in D365 Commerce HQ which basically is the source for e-commerce/CSU for on-hand.

If you want the inventory reservation, fulfillment of the B2B orders to happen from D365, then you will have multiple touchpoints. Of all cases, the best option for you will be to plan/convince the customer for D365 upgrade as the main stream support AX2012 R3 ended almost an year ago.

I would advise against this and instead focus your time and budget on migrating AX2012 to D365FO/HQ/Commerce.

You would not only have to plan for inventory but also all the integrations for other components that make the D365 Commerce solution work -

    1. You will need to configure PIM for products/catalog /assortments/product metadata (attributes etc) so that they are available on the site. Are you migrating this data from AX, how would both the D365 and AX systems kept in sync?

    2. Sales order processing - once the order is placed in D365 commerce how is the fulfilling going to occur? Are you transmitting the order into AX for fulfillment and updating back the status in D365? What about payments and payments reconciliation. What about invoice and Order status ?

    3. Customer/Address and customer metadata?

This is just the preliminary list- you would need both AX and D365 Commerce running in parallel and integrated to leverage D365 commerce capabilities with AX.

The simple/cleanest approach will be upgrade to D365 FO. If upgrading is in the pipeline and you need a temporary solution, implementing a 3rd party ecom solution which has built in integrators with AX and D365 FO will be your best bet.

However, implementing D365 FO is the best solution if you need to use full capabilities for D365 commerce.

@Anders Dahlin have you ever seen AX2012 R3 integrated with D365 Commerce? If yes, can you recommend an Integrator that has experience on that?

For us that would be a temporary solution until we migrate definitively to D365FO, but now the business is pressing to have the e-commerce  running as soon as possible.

    Hi,

I would suggest that you in batch on certain intervals or on update of inventory transaction in R3 use an integration to D365 through the standard integration patterns. Create an inventory transaction in HQ and then distribute to retail channel. In this way the stock would be available for all commerce retail channels.

    I’ve seen this integration before. D365 Commerce<->AX
