Limit to entity hops when using a plugin?

Hi Everyone, this is driving me insane....
I have a plugin that fires on Update of record A. The regardingObjectId of Record A is a case. The case has the contact record.
I have some helper classes that retrieve the case and contact.
I can read/write to record A (pass the regardingobjectid to a method that looks for the case)
I can read/write to the Case (pass the CustomerId to a method that looks for the contact)
but I can only read the contact record and not update it. (can read fields from the contact, but can't update)
Is there a limit to how many entities I can link through when updating?
When I try to update I get a missing key error, but I'm using hard coded values and setting fields that are coming through with EF.
