Updating CRM using SQL

I have a couple of custom entities in our Dynamics CRM DB.  Certain fields will change nightly.  It's so easy to do it with SQL and to schedule a nightly stored procedure that I really want to do that.  I keep hearing that that is discouraged.  Can someone please tell me why?

Thanks.

Using the API to make changes "protects" the data to ensure the application will work correctly at all times. An accidental delete or an inappropriate update could cause something to stop working when it comes time for the data to load in the UI. From a supportability standpoint, Microsoft can't fully predicate what SQL a person could come up with and execute but they can control what can be done with the API.

Because direct changes to the Database are not supported by Microsoft.

Well, I guess I don't know what all that means.  I'm a SQL guy and SQL is easy.  What do I need to learn to do this?

It means basically you can do anything you want, but if you make changes with direct SQL or make changes to the database schema, you can't be assured that Microsoft will support you if a problem develops as a result. Updates and upgrades could also potentially be an issue.

That's not saying a person isn't capable of making changes directly - it just isn't the preferred method. More than likely resources to guide you will be few and far between if at all.

Tkanks. Okay, that's fine.  I've downloaded the MS CRM 2011 SDK and the developer training kit.  I've done further searches and can't seem to find any turorials.  Where might I look?

The developer training kit has some videos and hands on labs included. The SDK has tons of samples to reference. Beyond that there are many blogs out there that have examples that you can use. Most all of your custom code will be either  be a plugin, a workflow/process, or JavaScript in nature to including those in your search might narrow down the results.
