Consolidating item Numbers

Hi,

I have a supplier that has different items numbers depending on manufacturing sites.  This creates problems with inventory control and planning.  The question is, could I have a single item number for those items?

I was told that Dynamics GP can record two different item numbers:  a manufacturer item number and your own item number.  Is this true?  If so when I would guess that when I purchase two equal items with different item numbers, I would be able to have them under my own item with a single consolidated inventory count?  Are there any implications to this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, GP has a Manufacturer Item Number.  I suggest you read the Help files for Manufacturer’s Item Number Maintenance and also for Item Vendor Maintenance (Vendor Item)  to determine which will work best for your situation.

You should, in the item master table, have only one item number for any item.  Otherwise quantities on hand get split and hard to manage.  Also, knowing when to reorder is a problem.

GP maintains an Item Vendor as well as a Customer Item Number table.  The first allows you to record the manufacturer's item for each and every vendor you purchase the item from.  The second allows you to record the customer's item number for each and every customer that purchases the item from you (if they order by their own part number)

These tables are covered in detail in our Understanding Purchase Order Processing for the Item/Vendor table and Understanding Sales Order Processing for the Customer Item table.  Check them out on our web site or on Amazon.com

    Hi,

I'm going to take another pass at this. I read that you acquire these items from a single vendor, but that vendor acquires these items from different  manufacturers. So, let's say your inventory's item number is 456 no matter which Mfgr the vendor uses. If you want to keep track of which manufacturer it is while not having a different item number yourselves, consider using Lots. You could have a lot number for each mfgr, yet maintain a single item number.

    kind regards
