MOSS server and BP and web services for GP

Posted on by 800

I have installed MOSS and was getting ready to install BP I need to install web services for GP. It says in the prerequisite checker that web services for GP should not be installed on the same site as BP. Does this mean I cannot install web services for GP on the same IIS server as GP?

Can I buy 5 MOSS clients if I have a 20 user Dynamics GP install. Getting vague answers below related to SQL cals?

Per the price sheet, to license MOSS, you must have 1 SQL CAL purchased as a prerequisite to purchase 1 MOSS CAL. They must be a 1:1 ratio. If you currently have 20 SQL CALS and only need 10 MOSS Licenses, you can either deactivate those SQL CALS (as long as you do not need them for other users where it is required per the price sheet). If you do not need those, they can be deactivated.

I would check the event log to see if there were any install errors. Also try restart IIS (from the command line type iisreset). Maybe try rebooting the server also.

I just installed web services and it finished I am getting an error when I try to connect to the url to test if I successfully installed. It says page cannot be found. I also noticed that econnect inbound and outbound 9.0 were on this server from a previous install of scribe and GP9. Not sure how to troubleshoot the manual does not give any ideas.

Thank you so much Kevin I feel like the fog has lifted and all the information is making sense. So when I install MOSS if I have standard a new instance of SQL will be loaded on my SQL server. I guess because I have enterprise SQL internally and an instance created for BP that I am using it did not ask me this.

By default when you install WSS or MOSS it will install a new instance of SQL (Embedded Edition). You can move all of those databases to you SQL standard instance, but I'm not sure why you would want to.

The MOSS Client does not replace anything in a typical microsoft office installation (unless your package of office includes MOSS cals).

You do not have to have MOSS to run Sharepoint and BP. You can run WSS, which doesn't require any CALs to be purchased (except for possibly Server CALs).

If you wanted to go the MOSS route you have two options. Purchase a MOSS Server License and then MOSS CALs (not from the Dynamics Price List) or Purchase the Dynamics Client for Office with MOSS. This includes the Server License as well as the CAL.

If you have SQL standard and the databases installed would another installation of SQL be required or are the search capabilities etc really more services running and SQL standard can be used for the database?

Is the MOSS client an additional office component or does it replace a microsoft office installation and include additional features.

Do we have to have the GP MOSS clients to run Sharepoint and BP or can we use a standard cal for sharepoint?

I also assume first we have to purchase MOSS enterprise and then purchase cals I am actually getting conflicting information on this from Microsoft

Re: Re: Re: MOSS server and BP and web services for GP

    OK here are my answers:

     1. On the GP price list there are two versions of the Dynamics Client for Microsoft Office. The $195 version runs on WSS which is a free, while the $395 version comes with a license of MOSS enterprise. So the only difference is if you want to be running on WSS and MOSS Enterprise. There are a couple of major differences between the two. One is workflow, both GP workflow and the workflow that is native to MOSS (although WSS has some native workflow as well). The other is the Enterprise Search, the ability to do a sharepoint search that will access both sharepoint data as well as GP data.

    2. So if you want to run Business Portal on MOSS then I believe you need to be running on MOSS Enterprise (but I could be wrong on this one. I'm not sure why if you are going to go the MOSS route that you would do anything other than enterprise because you wouldn't have access to some features of Business Portal. You might as well go the WSS route. Someone else may have a different opinion though.

    3. The version of SQL that MOSS or WSS runs on is SQL Server Embedded Edition, which will come with either MOSS or WSS, so you shouldn't have to worry about that.

Re: Re: MOSS server and BP and web services for GP

Thanks Kevin I will create another web site. I have another question I have been working on pricing for MOSS 2007 for a client for the past three weeks and have had trouble finding anyone at Microsoft that can clarify the pieces needed and pricing. Specifically my question is:

    1. What is the MOSS client that is WSS 195.00 and  MOSS 395.00 under the Microsoft Dynamics GP price list

    2. What version of MOSS 2007 is required for Dynamics BP 10.0

    3. What version of SQL is required based on the answer to number 2.

No, they can be installed on the same IIS server but they cannot be installed to the IIS website. For example if your business portal is installed to the default website, and uses port 80, then you would need to create a new website and specify a different port and install Web Services to that different site. From the IIS manager (on Administrative Tools) you can right click on the Web Sites and click on Create New. It will walk you through a set of steps to create a new website. Then when you install Web Services you will need to choose the site you just created.
