The answer is no, but a better question would be "why would you not want to?"  In general it is always best to be running the latest releases and updates to any Server components including SQL Server and Windows.

Thanks. Well, the reason is that i'm having problems with that update and the tech from windows support just prevented the update from showing up again. He said that I didn't need it.

And the other reason is that im getting a "Could not connect to database" error whenever I open Store Operations and Manager. Which happened around the same time as the issue with the windows update.

Any ideas of why i'm getting this error?

    Thanks

    Mike,

If you are getting a "Could not connect to database" message it means that RMS cannot connect to the server.  This is typically because SQL is not running, a firewall is blocking traffic, SQL is not configured to listen for remote connection, or something along those lines.  I'd give that a check first.

    Hey Ryan,

I checked and it's not the firewall. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

Mike, here is a few more questions for you/things to try:

Have you tried connecting to SQL vis SQL Management Studio?

Have you tried connecting from the database server?

Is SQL configured to listen with TCP/IP?

What port is SQL configured to listen on?

Can the remote computer ping the IP address of the database server?

    Let me know.

    Hey Ryan,

I honestly don't know how to check those things. But evetyhing was working fine till recently.

Do you think repairing the software might fix this problem?

    Thanks,

    Mike

It is possible, but I would say the likelihood is slim.  This seems to be a configuration problem which could have resulted from an upgrade to Windows or SQL Server.  Really to be able to help you more, I'd need to know some of the answers to the questions above.  If you are not comfortable (or able) to get the answers to those questions, please feel free to call into our tech support line and one of our technicians would be able to help you get the information and troubleshoot the problem fully.
