Setting up ODBC for Great Plains

Hi,

For users to access Great Plains/Frx, they need a ODBC setup.

We have sql 2005 for Great Plains databases. How can i setup the ODBC - should it be based on sql authentication or windows authentication? Should the users have db_owner access or sysadmin access?  We do not want to sset the users up with sa account in ODBC connection.

Can you please help me with this.

Thanks,

r_nsh.

For FRx, you can use either windows authentication or sql authentication. For GP the only choice is sql authentication. If you are on GP 10 or above, when you install using the GP installation package it will create the DSN for GP for you. Always create the users in GP so all SQL security will be set correctly. If you do need to manually create the DSN for GP do not worry about setting it up using the 'sa' password. GP will not use those credentials. As far as FRFx goes you can do one of two things:

    1) Go into SQL and create a user called FRX and make the password user(or whatever you choose). Map this user to the DYNAMICS and company databases. Create the DSN with sql authentication using these credentials and then log into FRX using these credentials

    2) Create  DSN using Windows credentials. In this case you will need to go into SQL and add these Windows accounts to SQL and map them to the DYNAMICS and company databases.

The advantage to option 2 is that the user does not need to log into FRx.

The sa account is not retained in the ODBC connection; it is just used to verify the connection details are correct.

Users should not have sysadmin access as this means they can do anything in SQL Server. They should also not have db_owner.

Follow the steps in my blog post that Sandip posted and you'll have the ODBC with correct settings. Create your users in Dynamics GP and they will have the correct permissions assigned in SQL
