Is Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 a useful tool for project detail scheduling?

Hi,

I would like to know your opinion about Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for project scheduling in detail.

We know there are some good scheduling softwares such as Microsoft Project or Primavera for project scheduling purpose. By implementing AX 2012, do you think we can eliminate using those software and get the same information from AX? specially I would like to know if there is a capability in AX for comparison between baseline, plan & Actual dates, since I couldn't find any option for setting the baseline dates to compare with plan dates.

Your opinions are appreciated.

    Hello Hasti,

I believe that it is only you who can make this evaluation as you know everything that is required for your company. What might help though getting an overview are the following MS whitepapers about resource scheduling and the MS Project Integration that might give you some ideas on what can be achieved and in which module/Software product.

    Hope this helps,

    Dear Ludwig,

We have a limitation for using the MS project integration option. So I'm looking to find out AX capabilities to control the project schedules just by itself. My concern is mainly in Time control, I'm pretty sure resources can be controlled through AX. however, I don't have any idea if we can define the baseline in AX.

    Thanks,

    Hello Hasti,

I see. Do you need to specify the baseline or do you also want to do some critical path analysis, etc.?

Yes! I want everything ... Mainly I want to know what are the capabilities of AX in these regards.

    Hello Hasti,

AX does currently not have all those features included in the AX client but provides I would say a basic time planning and scheduling functionality. Yet, with the next autumn release of the new Dynamics AX several new scheduling functionalities will most probably become available that might cover more of your requirements. Other than that I would suggest that you should try using the AX Project integration and do the detailled planning and scheduling there.

    Hope this helps,

    Ludwig

    Hi,

You can Primavera and later you can have integration using SharePoint. This will help you to control cost of AX licenses while you can integrate most of critical information in AX, directly or through added forms and tables.

Hope this will suffice. For further details, you can contact directly if required.

    Thank you.

A bit late given this was last year query.

Two way integration to Primavera is not trivial.

At the more recent CU updates for Ax 2012 R3, integration with MS Project server is no longer needed and you can integrate direct to MS project.
