SSL VPN

Can GP be run via an SSL VPN?  I'm trying to make it easy for a consultant or accountant to be able to access my data.  Lots of VPN appliances like sonicwall require their own client installed before you can vpn into a network.  with ssl vpn you can use a browser.  but not sure if you need to run remote desktop first then GP or if remote desktop even works with ssl vpn.  any recomendations and suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Re: SSL VPN

I use ssl vpn with some customers. Its eithre getting me to a remote desktop where GP is installed, or direct to their server (with maybe GP client installed).

Have never used a GP client installed on my local machine to access data on a server that I have connected to vis ssl.

I don't know if its possible. But, you could always install a GP client on whichever machine the consultant gets to over the vpn?

    Re: SSL VPN

We use SSL VPN internally and also have multiple clients using GP over SonicWALL SSL VPN.  Terminal Server / remote desktop most definitely works with it and is the only way I would recommend accessing GP remotely.

Hi Victoria, do you use SSL VPN with the following configuration: Locally installed GP client accessing a remote database over the VPN....or is it that you log into a remote desktop where GP is installed?

    Regards, Ian.

    Hi Ian,

No matter what type of remote connection I am using, I always use a remote desktop or terminal server.  This is one of those cases where it's not supported and I absolutely agree with the reasoning.  Have you seen this great post by David Musgrave about it?  blogs.msdn.com/.../why-cant-i-run-microsoft-dynamics-gp-via-odbc-over-a-wan.aspx

Also, it does not matter that you are using SSL. The issue is more one of supportability of the configuration.

Mariano, what exactly do you mean by that?

    Re: SSL VPN

I guess nothing different than what others have told you. If you are trying to run a GP client at one side over SSL VPN to a server on the other side. That is not a Microsoft supported configuration. Now, if you are using SSL VPN to Remote Desktop into a Terminal Server or Citrix server, that's supported, because the assumption here is that the GP client runs on the server that your are RDP-ing into and the SQL Server is on the other side too.

    RE: SSL VPN

I love that lots of MVPs have commented on this string, but I'm curious if any of you would be willing to weigh in again since this is a few years old.  Is it still not a Microsoft supported and/or commonly used configuration to have a client installation accessing a remote database by way of an SSL connection?

    Kimberly,

As far as I know, nothing has changed. You should still use Remote Desktop Services or Citrix for remote connectivity to Dynamics GP.
