Serial number tracking on an assembly

Hello.

Here is the situation:

We have products that we assign serial numbers and are part of an assembly.

As an example, lets call our item number "12345"

Item 12345 is an assembly that we need to track the serial number for. However, currently we need to input the serial number into item tracking lines in the assembly order (we combine other item numbers into this one item and only tack the 1 serial number for the assembly).

When we sell this item we then input the serial number into the sales order before posting it.

What I am wondering is if there is a way to have the Item tracking lines only used on Sales Orders and not assembly orders?

So basically, when we are assembling them we would not need to input the serial number for item 12345 in the assembly order, however when item 12345 is on a Sales Order, the serial number is required. Is this possible?? and if so how?
