Business Central or FInance and Operations

Hello all,

We are looking to move away from our current ERP (Syspro) to a cloud based solution within M365. Business Central has been proposed but we are a growing company, (currently just under 250 employees throughout the business) but we don't want to outgrow the solution we choose.

On that note we started to look at Finance and Operations, which appears to be much more feature rich, but the question is...is it actually worth it? We are also looking at Time and Attendance, and logging project time against contracts to track costs etc... Does Finance and Operations do offer this?

Its hard to find info on the web without being bombarded with sales calls etc, we understand we will need consultants to implement this but just looking for some high level info first.

Thanks in advance,
James

    Hi James 👋

    Thanks for your question!

Choosing between Business Central and Finance and Operations (F&O) depends on your company’s current needs and future growth plans.

    ✅ Business Central

    • Ideal for small to mid-sized businesses.
    • Easier and faster to implement.
    • Scalable, but may require customizations or third-party solutions for advanced scenarios like Time and Attendance or project time tracking.

✅ Finance and Operations (now part of Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management)

    • Designed for larger or rapidly growing organizations.
    • Offers advanced capabilities for finance, supply chain, HR, and project operations.
    • Includes Time and Attendance, project time tracking, and cost allocation features natively or via integrated modules.

💡 Since you're approaching 250 employees and considering project-based cost tracking, F&O may be a better long-term fit, especially if you anticipate complex operational needs.

    📌 Next Steps:

    • Review licensing and implementation costs.
    • Consider starting with a high-level fit-gap analysis with a Microsoft partner.
    • Explore Microsoft Learn and official documentation for feature comparisons.

    Hope this helps!

That's a really difficult question to answer without knowing more about your business.  My suggestion would be to speak with a couple top-tier resellers who implement and support both products to get their guidance on which would be best for your company.  I've implemented FinOps for clients where Dynamics GP (predecessor to Business Central) would have been a better fit but for whatever reason, the thought they needed or wanted FinOps.

Yes, FinOps offers Time & Attendance, integrated with Project accounting.  Business Central Premium appears to offer similar capabilities. Project management - Business Central | Microsoft Learn

    Hi James,

Agreed with  , that it's difficult to answer the question without knowing more...

D365FO has "Time and Attendance" and "Project management and Accounting" module.

For project module, it can do following:

    (1) Maintain a list of project master and details like Fixed-price/ T&M, the customer, if its a Parent or sub-project, etc

    (2) Enable budget control, if actual exceeds the budget, do you want the system to allow/ disallow/ warn overruns. Budget can have different models like Original and revision, and it has approval workflow feature.

    (3) Tracking the cost and sales of the project work breakdown structure. Can setup Cost and Sales prices for each project.

    (4) Time of the employee can be charged to a project as a cost.

    (5) Use project journals to record transactions such as hour (resource time) journals, expense journals, fee and item consumption.

If this information was helpful, kindly mark it as 'Verified'. Thank you. :)
