Steps after feature is disabled

Could someone tell what needs to be done after Performance enhancement for general ledger dimension set balance calculation feature is disabled? The feature is slowing down of our accountants work and also causing problems with balances.

After disabling the Performance enhancement for general ledger dimension set balance calculation feature in Dynamics 365 Finance, you must rebuild balances for your dimension sets. This ensures that the system recalculates balances from transactional data, restoring consistency and accuracy for trial balance inquiries and reports

    Hi,

You mentioned that the feature disabled balances. Are you aware what actually is happening when you enable the feature? It moves data to other tables. After enabling the feature, you have a task to rebuidl all from the dimension sets and monitor the status. After all has been initialized, it should be better performing and it will consume less database space.
As the data is stored in other tables, custom reports or Power BI solutions should be reviewed before enabling the feature in a production environment.

Can you elaborate on what you see as "slowing down" in your environment?

On turning off this feature it is recommended to limit the number of dimension sets that have balances displayed. The General ledger balance process that runs frequently is also turned off.

There are table level differences on the way the balances update affects across multiple tables when the feature is turned off. From a reporting standpoint, the DimensionAttributeValue and the DimensionFocus combination tables are leveraged. The financial dimension data is stored inefficiently and consumes more space so MS has introduced this as a feature for quick data retrieval and efficient storage.

We did not intend to enable the feature but after upgrade it had mysteriously enabled so we have not unfortunately done any testing of it either with the reports we are using.

Financial dimensions sets are still the current ones we already used before and no new exists.

By "slowing down" I mean users were able to see transactions right away in Trial Balance as they were able to recalculate the balance right away but now they need to wait that system does the recalculation. Also one thing, which disappeared after this feature was enabled, is the date information in Trial balance. Now you cannot see date when you take trial balance out to excel.

The mysteriously enabling is for sure triggered by a user. Either selected the wrong feature or maybe enabled all.
The update of balances is indeed now an automated background process which was requiring a manual batch job or action on the trial balance before.

I don't have experience in turning off this feature, but wonder if all data in the new tables will be transferred back to the old table series correctly. I do expect that this feature will become mandatory in the future. I will be recommended to test and adopt the feature. I do understand that you are in a position where you didn't want to be today. Unfortunately, I have seen more scenarios where all or the wrong features were enabled.

    Hi,
I have tested this feature deeply in the past few months. I found nearly 76% improvement in performance, with this feature enabled.
What you would do if tomorrow Microsoft makes this feature mandatory and turned on automatically? You can be left with no option to disable it, then.
When this feature is enabled, it uses Process Automation to calculate/update the balances of dimension sets.
If you disable this feature, you are going back to traditional batch jobs named as "Update Balances..."
    With this new feature disablled.
    1) makes sure you rebuild the balances for every dimension set
    2) make sure your batch jobs are running frequently, which updates the balances automatically.

    Hey,

The problem with this feature was that waiting 5 minutes to get the balances updated is really long time to wait when you are in hurry and there are many people doing postings at the same time to different accounts. Limit with this background process was that the recurrence could be between 5 to 59 minutes.
But I now changed one of already processed  "General ledger balance process" batch jobs to be recurring every minute.
I hope our users are happy with this solution.

I would be really interested to hear how you tested this feature improved the performance by 76 %.

    Hi,

The performance is related to reading and updating the details using new tables. In addition, indeed a new process has been implemented to update the balances every 5 minutes. In the past, the batch jobs needed to be scheduled manually which was forgotten by consultants a lot, resulting in a huge number of records that needed to be updated when opening or running the trial balance.
I have seen users waiting for about 50 minutes to get the trial balance on the screen. To avoid that scenario, Microsoft added process automation to update the balances, instead of the (forgotten) batch jobs. Here is the intended performance gain.
But now Microsoft did not implement the logic to update the balances for the last remaining number of records when opening the trial balance.
For many scenarios the implementation of the new feature is of great help, but for your scenario, it would be really useful to have the calculation done when starting the trial balance instead of showing the age of the current balances. You can consider a customization to extend the logic when calculating the balances for the trial balance as well.
