I am experiencing the following error while importing General journal account table in Dynamics 365 FO

The property DimensionLegalEntityContextField on the field: Account or the property PrimaryCompanyContext on the data entity must be set.
Can I import  Historical data from Navision in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations?
I have the same question (0)

    Hi s e,

You can import data from Navision to D365FO.

There are, however, a couple of questions related to this import, such as

    - is this a one time data import that you want to realize or do you want to regularly import data?

    - what kind of data do you want to import (opening balances, transactional data, ...)

    - what's the level of data that you want to import (individual transactions, summarized balances, etc.)

    - etc.

Depending on the answers to those questions, there are different options available how to import those data into D365FO.

Would be great if you could provide some feedback to those questions.

    Many thanks and best regards,

    Ludwig

Thanks Dr.Ludwig for providing an urgent response to the query.

Is this a one-time data import that you want to realize or do you want to regularly import data?

We are planning to move out of Dynamics 365 business central. As per management requirement, all data including history to be transferred in D365 FO

It will be one-time data import

    - what kind of data do you want to import (opening balances, transactional data, ...)

Opening balances and transactions include AP, AR, Fixed Asset , Bank and all historical data  from 2010

All master data are exported in D365 through data management and all required setup was done for processing transactions.

    - what's the level of data that you want to import (individual transactions, summarized balances, etc.

    individual transactions, summarized transactions

The Navision data entity structure and D365 are entirely different.

Can I know any data migration tools can help us to do complete migration?

While importing the G_L Entry table (exported from Dynamics 365 business central) in GeneralJournalAccountEntryEntity, I am getting the following error.

The property DimensionLegalEntityContextField on the field: Account or the property PrimaryCompanyContext on the data entity must be set.

Can you suggest me best data migration methods/steps to be followed in D365 migration?

Any tools valuable for this D365 migration?

There are several methods available in net for the migrating AX in to D365.

I didn't see any helpful site for migration from  Dynamics 365 business central

    Hello s_e,

Here is what you can try out:

    1. Create a template from D365 for "General Journal entity". To create one, create a simple manual general journal in AX, export it out using Data Management. This would show you the fields and help provide better visualization of what is required by D365FO.

    2. Then look at link below, that directs about importing data best practices.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../tips-tricks-import-general-journal-entity

Don't try to import data in tables even if entity exists. Best practice would be to bring in monthly consolidated balances and not all individual transactions. Tough discussion point with customer but consolidation balances works for most of the companies. If you are trying to bring in data from 2010 onwards, you should have discussion with your team / customer- what's the value of 2010 data in D365FO - Is this really required before you start exploring how to perform it and take a massive amount of work.

as suggested by Ludwig and Satish, sharing my tips

    1) use open in Excel for general journal or use data management to import for large volume

    2) Setup financial dimensions for integration application

    3) ensure excel template works with a sample export and then import

    4) Don't try to bring historical transactions rather just closing balances

    Good morning s e,

    Here some comments:

    a) Even if you are doing a one time data export I would recommend not to transfer transactional data but rather balances.

    Why?

BC and D365FO are different programs with a different posting logic. As a result, it might not be possible to transfer all data 1:1. Think especially about corrections and errors that have been entered. Trying to do a 1:1 transfer can easily take you weeks. That's why a summarized balance transfer for each account might be better.

    b) The tool that you can use for the balance transfer is the data migration framework if you have a lot of data to transfer. If the number of transactions is small you can also use the excel addin.

    c) Error message:

It seems that you missed the legal entity information in the data migration file. Try to add this information and then do the upload again.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

Satish - The customer has already justified a need to get historical data from 2010. And you seem to be questioning the need instead of providing any help. Why do you need to question, just provide the answer. If D365 is not capable of achieving this type of data migration, then acknowledge and move on.

Can you provide reasons for why we should not bring historical data? (Past 2-4 years) An ERP system should be able to help its users to take meaningful decisions based on historical data. Is D365 not capable of handling such data volumes? Then how can it handle volumes post-go-live?

So what if source system and target system has different entities? We would give data based on what target entity needs.

Why can't D365 take data as provided to it, rather than "posting" again? D365 does not need to "recalculate", it just needs to validate and insert these data. Most other ERPs allow easy migration for historical data, except D365.

Sha12 has another thread for his/her questions (Historical Data migration), therefore it'll be better to discuss them there.

    Hi Satish,

I'm not sure if bringing in the consolidated balance for bank is a good practice.  If the unreconciled bank deposits and unreconciled disbursements are not migrated to D365, when they are cleared the bank, how would one do the match up if the the detail unreconciled transactions are not there?
