Microsoft Dynamics® NAV 2009 includes some significant architectural changes with the addition of the RoleTailored client and Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server and has added new features such as enhanced reporting and Web services. Because of this, you may need to spend more time on the planning and upgrading phases when implementing Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009. Here are five tips for upgrading to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009:

  1. Plan for a longer upgrade process than previous upgrades that you may have performed. Even though the business logic is essentially unchanged, you must understand and migrate elements to take advantage of the new architecture. For example, if you want to use the RoleTailored client, then you must transform forms to pages and create new reports to make them available in the RoleTailored client.
  2. Examine how well your solution may work and investigate where you can benefit by replacing parts of your existing solutions with the new technologies that are available in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009. For example, Web services are easy to use and allow for XML-based interoperability with other components or programs. This may be a good time to make larger changes or redesign your solution to take advantage of new functionality or other improvements.
  3. Familiarize yourself with using Microsoft Visual Studio® debugging in the RoleTailored client. Spend time learning and understanding Event Viewer messages from the RoleTailored client.
  4. Focus on creating RoleTailored designs by identifying processes that are used by your users and build your functionality around this. For more information, download the Microsoft Dynamics customer model. The customer model is a tool that helps document, capture, visualize and share how people work within departments.
  5. Modify your existing solution so it is as close to standard Microsoft Dynamics NAV user experience guidelines as possible. This is useful with transformation because the transformation tool works best for forms that were developed with standard user experience guidelines.
