I have an custom field on a form in the opportunity entity (an approval with Yes/no choices), how can add the changes of this field on the time line, as the decision might change back and forth we need a log of the all the changes, and the best way for us is to present it in the timeline.
I haven't played around with the timeline a lot, but assuming it can only show activities, I'd do the following:
Workflow on change of the approval field that creates a record in a custom activity entity named "Approval log" or something of the like. The approval log activity is set regarding the opportunity via the WF, and you could also log which user made the change as that will be the owner of the activity.
The activity should have 2 status reasons under the Completed status, one named "Approved" and one named "Approval removed" or whatever makes sense to the users. That should give you a log of all the approval actions, although they will end up in the middle of all other activities in the timeline.
If a regular subgrid covers their needs, I would recommend making the approval log a non-activity entity and add a subgrid of them on the opportunity form.
If you just want to log, you can use out of box auditing capabilities. crmbook.powerobjects.com/.../auditing-in-microsoft-dynamics-crm
If you want to log & also display then you can have your own custom audit entity with field like date and New Value and then you can have a real time workflow which triggers on change of this field and then stores the values in the Custom Audit entity. You then this entity as a sungrid to display the changeset.
Hope this helps.
I will try this, I am sure it will work. Many Thanks
