GP 2013 R2 - Copy and Paste from Excel to GL – Nothing Happens

In order for the user to take advantage of the new Copy and Paste from Excel functionality, Open XML SDK 2.0 needs to be in place. By default, this is installed with GP 2013, so all users should have it.  Open XML SDK 2.0 was introduced in GP 2013 because it was much more performant than the old COM Object Model. However, some users still prefer to use the old method from GP 2010 in order to do imports for things like budgets from excel that have calculated cells.

I recently ran into an instance where the user was updating to GP 2013 R2.  When they tried to take advantage of the new Copy and Paste from Excel functionality in the GL Transaction Entry Window, nothing happened in GP. No reports or errors showed up like you would expect if the user had invalid or no information selected to be copied.

The reason for this issue was a setting that they had altered/added in the DEX.ini in order to use the old COM Object Model:

‘UseCOMForExcelExport = TRUE’

With this setting in place, they will not be able to use the Copy and Paste to Excel Functionality because it doesn’t allow GP to use Open XML SKD 2.0 which it needs in order to Paste the information from Excel to the Journal Entry. You can easily disable this setting so that you can use the Copy and Paste from Excel in GP by changing the line in the DEX.ini to ‘UseCOMForExcelExport = FALSE’, (If GP is open, make sure to close and re-launch GP). If for some reason a user would need to toggle between both the old COM object Model and Open XML SDK often, you could also create two launch files pointing each pointing at a different DEX.ini file.

I am excited about this new feature, and I hope the information above is helpful to you.  For more information on new features in GP 2013 R2 Financials please visit the link to our video below.

Thanks,

Isaac Olson

    Hi,

We have GP 2015 R2 installed.  We can use the Copy and Paste from Excel to GL but only with the functional currency.  When another currency is selected, the Paste button is disabled.

Does anyone know about this issue?  Is there a way to make it work?  Thanks.

    Hi , Everybody .

I have GP 2013 R2 installed. I can use the Copy and Paste from Excel to GL from original Dynamics.set and Dex.ini ( Original Folder of GP2013R2 ) , but when i use another Dynamics.set and another Dex.ini The Copy and Paste doesn't work.

I checked the file Dex.ini and there is a line to use the old COM Object Model . Any other settings I Should check ?

    Hi CJ,

I am not aware of any known issues around this unless you are attempting to do this in web client.  One thing that you could try is doing a repair on 'Open XML SDK 2.0' in your add/remove programs.  If this is not in place, or is damaged, that could stop the function from occurring.

Also you could check to see if there are any issues with the clipboard, or copying and pasting into GP in general.

Otherwise you may want to open a support case if the issue is still lingering after that point for more in depth troubleshooting.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi

I have GP 2013 R2 and GP 2015 installed on a demo server. I can use the Copy and Paste from Excel to GL in my GP 2013 R2 demo company, but nothing happens when I try it in GP 2015. I checked the dex.ini file and there isn't a line to use the old COM Object Model. I added the line and set it to False and still nothing happens. Any other settings I should check?

    Thanks,

    Carolyn

FYI I figured out my DUMB problem! It would help if I didn't include the headers!!!! After I only copied the line items, my copy and paste was successful. So, lesson learned - don't include the headers :)

Hi, I am having issues with this - I set up a template, copied and pasted the 2 line example for a demo I was prepping for and it worked! How awesome! But then, during the demo, no matter what I did the entry would not paste. I am now getting a "GL Transaction Paste Validation Report" that tells me the first account number ("Line 1") doesn't exist when in fact, it does. It also looks like I'm trying to paste $0 debits and credits, which isn't true either.

It's like something else is stuck in the clipboard, and I've cleared that a number of times.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,

    Heidi
