New Company Creation

If you are like to create a new company (Without the sample data) and start setting it up a bit by bit so you understand how things work in Business Central, then here is a good place to start, how to create a new company?

In MS Dynamics GP, you run the utilities and then create a new company, In Business Central, it is much simpler, just search for “Companies” and follow the wizard.

Search for “Companies”

Once you click on “Companies” a new page will open and it is called “Companies”, in this page you can see the list of the created companies.

“Companies” Page

Click on “New” and then “Create New Company”, this will start the Wizard.
Notes:

  • If you select “New” -> “New”, Business Central will error and will ask you to start the wizard.
  • Earlier, when I wanted to created a new company, I used to select “New” -> “New”, and this will insert a record in the grid allowing the user to enter the “Name” and the “Display Name”. Not sure but this might only works on the “On Prem” versions now.

Once you click on “New” -> “Create New Company”, the wizard is started by “Create New Company” page, click Next.

Create New Company – Step 1

Clicking “Next” will take you to the second step in the wizard, here where you specify the company name and you can select the type of data that you want Business Central to copy to the new company while it is being created.
Select “Production – Setup Data Only” and click “Next”

Evaluation – Sample DataThis option will copy sample data to the newly created company (invoices, entries…etc)
Production – Setup Data OnlyThis option will copy the required setup to start the new company (Chart of accounts, Payment Methods…etc)
Create New – No DataThis option will create the company only.
Data and Setup Type
Create New Company – Step 2

Business Central will now ask about managing users while creation the new company, Click “Next”

Create New Company – Step 3

That’s it, Click “Finish”.

Create New Company – Step 4

Congratulations, you have create a new company.

Quick Tips:

  • As known, In MS Dynamics GP, you need to specify the database name (5 Char) while creating a new company but in Business Central you don’t. The reason behind that is Business Central Companies Tables live in the same database. In MS Dynamics GP, every company has its’ own database.
  • You don’t need to specify the Maximum Segment No. and Maximum Segment Length for the General Ledger Account No. as you do in MS Dynamics GP. General Ledger Account No. in Business Central is like any other code (Similar to Customer No. or Vendor No.)
  • It is faster in Business Central to create a company, as it takes around 5 min (depends on the “Setup and Data” selected above) comparing to MS Dynamics GP which take around 15-20 min.

How to log in to the newly created company?

  • Click on the “Setting” button.
  • Click on the option list (3 Dots) in the “Company” filed.
  • Highlight the newly created company and select “OK”

Note:

  • When you log in to the new company for the first time, complete the 2 steps wizard and it is done.

Hope that helps.
Until next post.
