Hello everyone!
Are you a newbie in using Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations? Whether as a consultant or as a D365 F&O client, it is a must to know the basics on how to navigate D365 F&O or if you are familiar in using Dynamics AX I am sure that you need a bit of adjustment to navigate D365 F&O. And I admit in experiencing that one.
But there is nothing to worry about as you are on the right article for you to make yourself familiar with the concepts of navigating D365 F&O.
So, let us start unboxing the Basic Navigation Concepts of D365 for Finance and Operations.
MICROSOFT DYNAMICS FOR FINANCE AND OPERATIONS – BASIC NAVIGATION CONCEPTS
Before a user can access Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, one should have the address link and user credentials (i.e. email address and password) to sign in. The user can also log in with a security code thru short message service one-time pin or through GitHub. Once successful, the dashboard will be the default interface that a user can view.
Since as a default it is the dashboard for the home page that you can view after you signed into your account or into a client’s account, let me discuss to you the different ways on how to navigate it.

Legal entity |
If there are multiple legal entity that is maintained in a specific environment you can go on to different legal entities by clicking on the name of the current legal entity where you are and a drop down will be available on where you can select another legal entity. |

Messages |
The bell button is where you can see notifications or system messages (e.g. approvals, completed actions, error messages, etc.). Alternatively, you can access this using shortcut keys Ctrl+Shift+F7. |

Settings |
This is used to view or change your system settings or to create task recordings. |
|
Help & Support |
This is where you can provide feedback, search for useful tools and ideas and even raise for a support ticket. |
|
User account |
This is used to properly sign out to your D365 F&O account. |
|
Navigation search |
If you are not sure on where you can locate a feature, setup or parameters that you need then this pane is the tool that you should use. |
|
Navigation pane |
By clicking the hamburger menu, you can see four sections: Favorites, Recent, Workspaces, and Modules. Alternatively, you can access this using shortcut keys Alt+F1. |
|
Calendar |
This is used to change your session date. There are several reasons on why a user needs to update the session date and on my experienced session date is changed to simulate transaction for postdated checks. |
|
Work items |
This displays the work items assigned to a user. |
|
Workspaces |
This contains different daily used reports, frequently used data and various transaction details to provide user friendly view to improve the efficiency of day to day task. This can also be personalized according to your need or preference. |
Now that you know how to navigate the home page, I think it is about time to discuss on how we can explore the Navigation pane page, Workspaces page and Forms navigation page of D365 F&O.

Favorites section |
Provides quick access to the list of forms that the user has explicitly marked as a favorite. Marking a form as a favorite is accomplished by clicking the star icon next to the form in the navigation pane. |

Recent section |
Lists the forms that the user has most recently visited. |
|
Workspaces section |
Shows the set of workspaces that a user can conveniently access. |
|
Modules section |
Provides the full list of modules. Clicking on a module will open the right side of the navigation pane, where the user can navigate to the desired page in that module. |
|
Area page |
Shows the available functions, reports, setup and parameters in a module. |

Tiles |
Click this to begin new tasks or to access list of items. |
|
Lists |
This section contains a set of relevant lists for the activity. |
|
Links |
This section is used to access different functions or pages which are in the links. |
These sections which are available in the Workspaces can be personalized depending on the functions or pages that you need in a workspace. Let us have for the illustration the General ledger Workspace, you can personalize it by selecting a function in the General ledger module by selecting Options tab > Personalize group > Add to workspace button, then select from the drop down the applicable workspace and on where workspace section you want it to place.

Action pane |
This is the part of a form that organizes and displays buttons that represent the actions that the form supports. The action pane contains Menu buttons which are organized into tabs and groups. |

Action search |
Helps you find and access different menu buttons. |
|
PowerApps |
This is used to integrate PowerApps studio in D365 F&O. |
|
Open in Microsoft Office |
This comes with Open in excel and Export to excel. |
|
Attachment |
Click this button if there are documents or files that you want to attach. |
|
Refresh |
This is used to refresh an entire page. |
|
Open in new window |
You can make use of this button to work on the same environment with multiple windows instead of navigating different pages on a single window. |
|
Close |
Since D365 F&O is a web-based platform, users are sometimes mistakenly closing the entire web window instead of closing only a page. If you want to close only a page in D365 F&O, then better click this button. |
|
Filter |
This is used to find data or transactions which is/are within the parameter. |
|
List page |
This is a form that displays a list of related data records. List pages represent the primary means of displaying data, performing actions on specified records, and opening forms. |
|
Related information |
This displays the relevant information of a transaction or data. |
