Locations in warehouses may have stocking limits. For instance, location A11 might have a limit of 100 pieces of part X . If the location is full, the system should advice warehouse workers to store the items in another location. Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management supports this process with the function ‘Location stocking limits’ in Warehouse management.
1. The location stocking limit function is available in Warehouse management
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > Warehouse > Location stocking limits
2. In the form ‘Location stocking limits’, three different types of limits can be used:
- Limits for products
- Limits for product variants (colour, size configuration, or version)
- Limits for container types (boxes or pallets)
As can be seen from the picture above, part X has a limit of 100 pieces for location A11 and A12.
However, when location A11 has reached a limit, the system should recommend a different location. We have configured several standard locations for part X to achieve that.
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > Warehouse > Fixed locations
3. When workers perform a put away process, the system should first check whether location A11 is available. Then, other locations such as A12 can be checked. To set the correct order for alternative put away locations, the search direction for purchase orders in the work template should be ascending, i.e., from A to Z.
Demonstration
1. What does it look like when you receive a purchase order? Let us first look at the on hand inventory of Part X. The current inventory at location A11 is 50 pieces.
2. We also have a purchase order for Part X, quantity 150 pieces.
3. In the warehouse app, the purchase order number needs to be entered first.
4. Then, the bar code of the item has to be scanned.
5. Subsequently, the quantity (150 pieces) is to be entered and confirmed.
6. After confirmation of the quantity, Dynamics splits the put away work according to the settings: 50 pieces to location A11 and 150 pieces to location A12.
