Recently, a helpful new feature with much business value has been released. It is called ‘GS1 Barcodes’. GS1 is a format for shipment labels that can be used as a global standard for the exchange of data between companies. With this feature, warehouse workers can extract all required information through a single scan of a bar code. For example, when receiving purchase orders, warehouse workers would normally need to enter a purchase order number; scan a product barcode; and enter a quantity. With the new feature GS1, the purchase order number, product, and quantity will be registered with a single scan. This saves time for warehouse workers and increases warehouses processes efficiency. In this blog I will demonstrate how you can configure and apply the GS1 Feature.
Configuration
1. The first thing users need to do is to enable the feature ‘Scan GS1 barcodes’
Path: Workspaces > Feature management
2. In the warehouse management parameters, you need to configure a FNC1 character and a Group separator. The FNC1 character is a prefix when a bar code is parsed. The Group separator is character that identifies parts of the bar code.
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > Warehouse management parameters
3. Subsequently, an application identifier needs to be configured. The application identifier defines the meaning of the data in a bar code. In this example I will use 01 (GTIN), 30 (Quantity) and 38 (PO number).
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > GS1 > GS1 application identifiers
4. Then, the GS1 Policy needs to be configured. In the policy you can configure the mapping between the application identifiers and the fields in Dynamics.
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > GS1 > GS1 policy
5. The GS1 policy can be configured in the mobile device menu item.
Path: Warehouse management > Setup > Mobile device > Mobile device menu items
Demonstration
1. A purchase order for supplier V00000011
2. Suppliers deliver the purchase order with a barcode or QR code on the package that contains the following data:
In this barcode you can see the application identifiers 01, 30, and 38.
3. The warehouse worker opens the menu item ‘Purchase order receipt’ and scans the QR code.
4. With a single scan the purchase order ID, item, and quantity is registered in the scanner.
5. A warehouse worker only needs to press the confirm button. Then, the item will be registered at the inbound location and will be ready for put away to a location in the warehouse.
6. After confirmation, the item will be registered at the inbound location, and the put away process will be started.
