The Estimator Gap: Why FinOps struggle to compare Copilot costs today

Carsten Groth mscrm Profile Picture Carsten Groth mscrm 2,085
🚨 September 1 changes more than billing. It changes the FinOps conversation around AI agents. Since Microsoft announced that Copilot Credits billing will begin for existing GitHub Copilot harness-built agents in Copilot Studio, I've had discussions with numerous FinOps, architecture, and platform teams. What surprised many of them wasn't the billing model itself. It was the realization that the two official Copilot Studio cost estimators cannot currently be compared directly. One estimator focuses on agent orchestration. The other focuses on LLM execution. Both are valuable. Neither provides a unified view. The result? 🔹 Architects struggle to validate savings assumptions 🔹 FinOps teams struggle to create consistent cost models 🔹 Customer-facing teams struggle to explain different estimates 🔹 Trust and decision-making slow down In my latest article, I explore: ✅ Why the estimator gap exists ✅ Why this is a tooling challenge, not a customer problem ✅ A practical FinOps framework for comparing costs today ✅ Why Microsoft should consider delivering a unified estimator As AI workloads become more agentic and model choices expand, cost transparency becomes just as important as capability. Transparency builds trust. Trust accelerates adoption. #MicrosoftCopilot #CopilotStudio #GitHubCopilot #FinOps #CloudEconomics #AITransformation #AgenticAI #GenerativeAI #AITCO #CostGovernance #PowerPlatform #EnterpriseAI #AIAgents #CloudFinance #DigitalTransformation
