Catch weight in Warehouse Management (outbound proces)

Laurens vd Tang Profile Picture Laurens vd Tang 3,359 Super User 2025 Season 2
Catch weight is a measurement unit for the actual weight of a product when it is being sent to a customer. You can also call it “approximate” weight. Catch weight is applicable for products in the food industry, e.g. meat, cheese, or shrimps. Let’s use the example of meat. A company sells meat. The meat products are packed in special boxes. When the company sells 10 kg meat, the meat is being weighted, and packed into the boxes. Then, it is sent to a customer. Warehouse management has a helpful function to support the receipt and picking process for catch weight items.

Configuration

1. When you create a newly released product, you need to activate the parameter “catch weight item”

2. In the unit conversion, you then have to configure the conversion between the unit of measure (sales / inventory / purchase and BOM) and the catch weight unit.

3. On the item you need set the catch weight item handling policy. The catch weight item handling policy determines when the warehouse worker needs to enter the weight, for instance during the picking or packing process.

4. For the unit sequence group, you have to select a unit sequence group that contains the catch weight unit of measure.

5. In the item group you also need to set up ledger accounts for the account types “catch weight loss account” and “catch weight profit account”.

Demonstration

1. For the product “M070220220815 Meat” we have 20kg on stock (2 boxes).

2. When you switch from the inventory quantities to the catch weight quantities, you can also see how many boxes you have on stock.

3. Let’s create a new sales order and add our product “M070220220815 Meat”.

4. Once the item has been added, the catch weight quantity is visible, as well as the sales unit on the sales order line.

5. In order to pick the requested quantity, we release the sales order to the warehouse.

6. Once released, a new picking request becomes available on the scanner.

7. The scanner asks to confirm the proposed values like quantity and location.

8. After confirmation, the scanner asks the warehouse employee to enter the picked catch weight.

9. Let’s enter a catch weight of 9.5.

10. After entering the catch weight quantity, the scanner advises the warehouse worker to bring the picked box with “M070220220815 Meat” to the shipping location.

11. In the work details of the sales order, you will see the catch weight quantity.

12. The last step is to confirm the shipment and to post the packing slip.

13. The sales order status has now been changed to “delivered”

14. The delivered catch weight quantity is also visible on the packing slip journal.
