Microsoft Dynamics GP Fonts too small

Ken Hubbard Profile Picture Ken Hubbard

Hi,

In Support, we often get questions like: "Why is the font so tiny in version XXX and why can't I change it?"

The issue is that Microsoft Dynamics GP uses a Fixed Font or Monospaced font size which has not changed since the product was ported to a graphical user interface (GUI) from command line. What has changed is the resolution of some monitors in proportion to the size of the monitor. For instance, think of an end user on a laptop with a 1920x1080 resolution using the same screen size as a 1024x768 resolution monitor was 5 years ago or a smaller screen on a mobile device such as a Surface Pro that uses a high resolution.. The result is pushing more into an unchanged or smaller space.

Up until recently the solutions were:

- Introduce a physically bigger monitor.

- Reduce the screen resolution.

These options do not allow us to use our screens 'as is' without sacrificing the way our displays look with higher resolution.  However, there are a couple other considerations that are available now for Microsoft Dynamics GP users both in a desktop environment or in our increasingly mobile world.

Web Client:

With the porting of Dynamics GP to the web client we are now able to utilize the zooming feature that comes with your web browser. This allows you to scale the window to your viewing capability.

Desktop Display Scaling

Not surprisingly, Dynamics GP is not the only product burdened with the reality of reduced screen space for our product coupled with the inability to change the product to have the same user accessibility like a web browser. For reasons such as this, Microsoft introduced Desktop Display Scaling in Windows 8.1 forward which allows you to adjust the scale displayed on a specific monitor without adjusting the resolution.

This feature gets discussed and reviewed in the following blog:

http://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2013/07/15/windows-8-1-dpi-scaling-enhancements

Below is the difference you would see in the same physical area on 1680x1050 resolution screen when moving from 100% to 175%.

What I like about this feature is that you can turn your scale up which results in increased readability for Dynamics GP and other non-scalable products, but you can also take advantage of the scaling in your more modern applications in order to find a happy medium.

I hope you find this helpful.

Ken Hubbard,

    Hi Ken

You can also adjust the bitmap fonts used with registry settings with Regedit, or even easier with GP Power Tools (http://WinthropDC.com/GPPT) from the Dex.ini Settings window.  This can increase the font size, but should be used in conjunction with DPI scaling.

I just installed GP 2015 on a Surface Pro 4 and was surprised that GP looks just fine to me based on the few windows I checked.  But of course I'm using the default 200% scaling on the Surface 4.

Anything at 100% scaling on the new high res screens (like several apps I have) is incredibly small.  Seems that screen resolution, for the first time in many, many years, has finally leapfrogged the software--hopefully the software catches up soon.

Thanks Ken for bringing this up.. This is unfortunately the only way to respond to the font problem that has been plaguing GP users for several years now with the rise of large displays (I've users that have 27" monitors with sheer high resolutions).

One downside is  that many IT departments are not ready yet to switch from Win7 to Win8.1, and don't even talk about 10.
