Application Insights is a powerful tool that provides deep telemetry and performance monitoring for various Microsoft services, including Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (F&O). When enabled, it offers valuable insights into application behaviour, performance trends, and potential issues. However, there are still gaps in the telemetry that limit its full potential—especially when it comes to tracking slow-running queries.
The Missing Piece: Query Performance Data
One key limitation we've observed is the lack of visibility into slow-running queries within Application Insights. Although you'd expect such critical performance data to be captured and surfaced, it's notably absent. The reason? This information never makes its way from Dynamics 365 F&O to Application Insights.
Upon further investigation, it's evident that the internal flight responsible for sending this data is disabled in the current Dynamics 365 F&O environment.
A Bug and a Blocker
Interestingly, Microsoft had enabled this flight at one point in the past. However, it was later disabled due to a bug. This issue is documented on Microsoft’s Lifecycle Services (LCS) platform with the ID 968862. Until this bug is resolved and the flight is re-enabled, users won't have access to query performance metrics in their Application Insights dashboards.
Why This Matters
Having access to slow-query data is crucial for identifying performance bottlenecks and optimizing system performance. For large enterprises and organizations relying on Dynamics 365 F&O, this missing telemetry can make it difficult to proactively resolve issues or understand performance degradation.
Looking Ahead
We’re hopeful that Microsoft will prioritize and complete the necessary work to re-enable this feature. Once resolved, it has the potential to benefit thousands of customers globally by enhancing their visibility into system performance and streamlining troubleshooting efforts.
In the meantime, organizations should stay informed via LCS and keep an eye on bug ID 968862 for updates.
