PowerBI and Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 – How to download, install and create your first report

Hello everyone, my name is Christos Pittis, and I am a Microsoft Dynamics NAV consultant. In this episode, I am going to show you how to download, install and create your first Power Bi report with Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016, on your PC and mobile device.

Power BI is a suite of business analytics tools to analyze data and share insights. Monitor your business and get answers quickly with rich dashboards available on every device.

Basically, you can Visualize and analyze everything in one place.

  • Your whole business on one dashboard

·      Create stunning interactive reports

·      Consistent analysis across your organization

·      Easily embed BI and analytics in your app

NAV Web Service is one of the Sources for Power Query/Power BI. Let me show you how to create and publish one. Go to the search bar and search “web service”. Click on it. Click on the New button at the top. In the Object Type field select Query, and in the Object ID find and pick query 100. Tab away and give a Service Name to it. Place a checkmark in the Publish field in order to get an OData URL.

Open your browser and type https://powerbi.microsoft.com

Click on the SignUp Free button. Under the Choose how to get started section and PowerBI desktop for windows click on the download button. While waiting for the executable file to get downloaded, feel free to register yourself.

Hit the executable file to start installing the suite. Follow the wizard and complete the installation. Once the installation finishes, open the application and sign in.

Go back to the NAV web services and copy the OData URL from the query 100. Access the PowerBI application and click on the Get Data button on the top. Click on the OData Feed button and then paste the URL. Click OK. Click Load so to load the data from your Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 database.

Place a checkmark in the fields you need. In this example I will work with the following fields:

  1. No.
  2. Name
  3. Country/Region
  4. City
  5. Sales (LCY)
  6. Profit (LCY)

Enlarge the table on your left-hand side and click on the Sales (LCY) column to sort the data. Click on the pie chart to get a visual representation of the report. Finally, hit the Publish button on the top, so you make the report available on all your devices.

You can access all your reports with mobile devices if you are on the go, for example, if you are at the customer site, or you are in a board meeting. Go to your mobile’s app store and download and install the PowerBI app.
