401 Unauthorised error in CRM 4.0

Hi Guys,

We need your valuable inputs for the following scenario as well, in CRM 4.0, whenever users retrieves data through Reports or Advanced Find, it prompted to get user name and password for 3 times to continue the process. In some cases it ends up in Http Error 401: Unauthorized error. It seems to be common issue if the IE settings or IIS authentication was not properly set but it is set properly in this scenario.


Also we are getting this whenever we are accessing the application through common domain URL but not in the case of direct CRM server/IP URL. We have checked the CRM config file, registry settings and IIS settings also but increasing the timeout value didn’t lend a hand.


Can we get some idea where we can check and analyze to prevent this because if the load of system is more then users are not able to work efficiently and it ended up in 401 unauthorized error. 


Kindly help us on the same.

The 2 most likely causes are:

  • Issues with SPNs - the fact that you get different behaviour with different URLs means this could be an issue. Check if you have SPNs both for the server name, and the FQDN
  • Kerberos issues. It's worth checking is there are any Kerberos errors in the event log (either the CRM Server or the Domain Controllers) that coincide with the authentication errors
