I have a SiteMap SubArea that points to a URL (instead of a custom entity). I assigned an Icon (18x18 Pixels, .png file as specified in the SDK for the new Navigation tiles) as a Web Resource.
When I navigate to this custom SubArea, the Icon I specified does not display.
I've seen this issue with other ISV's that assign a URL to their SubArea. The Icon doesn't display for them either, so I'm sure this is a bug. I have 7 custom SubAreas in my custom Area tile. Without the icons, it's 7 blank, gray tiles. Hardly appealing of the customer.
Has anyone discovered a work around for this issue?
+ 1 - looking for an answer as well.
Same problem with me

+1. Super annoying.
Same problem, any answers?
I'm experiencing the same. I've already tried different settings. The last thing I've heard, was that this is not supported yet?
I am also looking for a solution to this
Hi MDODDIO73 ,
Can you tell:
1. Which CRM version?
2. Share the line from sitemap subarea where you are using image and URL
I don't know if MDODDIO73 is around but i'll share my details if it matters:
I'm using 2013 On Premises
<SubArea Id="nav_myCustomArea" Title="Deprecated Test Title" Icon="$webresource:vrp_caseresult16x16" Url="../../CustomPages/default.aspx">
The button is there and I can open my page but can't get the icon to show. I tried hardcoding an image path as well. Such as "../../_imgs/ico_18_2020.gif"
Sure, Dynamics CRM 2013 On-Premise, Hosted and On-line. We have a web resource that display a custom web page in a SiteMap Sub-Area. Both the HTML Web Resource and the Icon are referenced the way you would any icon on the SiteMap (Area or Sub-Area), only difference here is that it is not an entity, but a custom HTML page:
Sorry, the code I pasted got dropped from my last response:
<Area Id="Data" Icon="$webresource:wf_SiteMapIconFilingCabinet_32.png" ShowGroups="true">
<Title LCID="1033" Title="Data Maintenance" />
<Group Id="GeneralEntityLauncher" IsProfile="false">
<Title LCID="1033" Title="General" />
<SubArea Icon="$webresource:new_EyeIcon_32.png" Id="Nav_GeneralLauncher" Url="$webresource:/wf_/WF/entitylauncher.html" AvailableOffline="false" PassParams="true">
<Title LCID="1033" Title="General Entities" />
Hi, I tried this and found the same issue.
Got invisible if I fill the URL to my own Web Resource.
But, when I tried to find out and I change the URL to the Dashboard, Personal Wall, or even the Microsoft URL, I can get the icon, but it is different icon, not from my sitemap definition sub area icon.
Here when I try to fill URL to same as the nav_dashboard has :
And when I try to redirect the URL address to :
All of them did not use the Icon that I supposed to use it.
They like be changed dynamically by default from the URL that are being used by CRM by default, such as nav_dashboard, nav_personalwall, and
Then, when I try to debug, actually it refers to the invisible.gif, not to the icon we were referring to.
I though I can use the unsupported way to replace this image, but actually, this image is cannot be just replaced since it is used in many places.
Is it bug? Or any setting maybe to change it.
+1 I Have this issue too.. If I want to define an icon for a Sub Area with an URL, the icon will not show, only the gray tile is shown, without any icon.
And it seems like CRM is not even trying to get this icon, when loading the page.
There is an existing connect request about this connect.microsoft.com/.../829816. Looks like a bug.
Any news on this issue?
We are experiencing the same behaviour: This really needs to be fixed!
Has anyone tried this on CRM 2013 SP1 UR1? We haven't had a chance to update yet, but I see nothing regarding this issue in the release notes...
I had to actually update the Custom Entity in the solution and use the "Update Icons" feature of the entity. I choose a 32x32 image and it updated it on the Sub Areas.
As a work-around, try removing any path naming from your web resource image name. i.e. instead of $webresource:new_/Images/MyImage.png try using $webresource:new_MyImage.png.
If you use the F12 tools in IE, you will see that you get a '404' not-found on any Icon image that contains a path in its name for URL SubAreas. The 'missing' image simply has the path truncated from its name.
On CRM 2015 OnPremise, Update 0.1 and Update 0.2 the issue still exists.
On CRM 2016 OnPremise, Update 0.1 the bug is fixed.
