Simplifying Subcontracting Workflow Without BOMs/Routing in Business Central

Posted on by 5

I'm working with a client in Business Central who finds BOMs, routing, and the full manufacturing module too complex for their subcontracting needs.

The situation: they send raw materials out for subcontracting (e.g., coating) and receive them back in batches. They want a simple way to track added costs without using the full manufacturing features (BOMs, work centers, etc.).

Our workaround uses item journals to convert raw to finished goods and adjust costs via custom fields on purchase orders, but we're looking for an even simpler, effective solution.

Anyone have experience with this or know of third-party solutions that could help?

Thanks in advance!

You could simplify the process by using purchase orders that include direct cost tracking for subcontracting services among us. Here are a few options to streamline the process:

    1. Subcontracting worksheet: While more integrated, it's simpler than full BOMs and routing.
    2. Item charges: You can allocate additional costs (like subcontracting fees) directly to purchase orders, ensuring the correct cost is reflected on the finished goods.
    3. Third-party solutions: Some extensions like Jet Reports or Continia Document Capture simplify cost tracking and reporting.

Hi, have you tried Assembly Management? It is a simplified version of the manufacturing process.

    Thanks.
