Search names are being used for different purposes.They are mostly for quick searches during to find the vendors, customers or items.

    In D365 they act as an extra keyword field so users don’t have to remember the exact name or number, you can store abbreviations, old names, common misspellings, etc. and it improves lookup/search quite a bit. We used them a lot for vendors where people search by short names or legacy codes, saves time and avoids duplicates.
