Best approach for migrating complete historical data from QuickBooks to Business Central SaaS

Hello Community Members,

We are working on a customer migration project from QuickBooks to Dynamics 365 Business Central SaaS and would like to get recommendations from anyone who has completed a similar migration.

The customer has been using QuickBooks for many years and has a significant amount of historical financial data. They do not want to keep QuickBooks as a separate historical reference system after going live with Business Central. Their expectation is to have complete historical information available directly within Business Central from Day 1.

We are looking for a migration approach or third-party tool that can help us migrate both master data and historical transactional data from QuickBooks to Business Central SaaS.

The migration scope includes:

  • Master Data:
    • Chart of Accounts
    • Customers
    • Vendors
    • Items (if applicable)
    • Dimensions and other setup/master records
  • Historical Financial Data:
    • General Ledger Entries and complete financial transaction history
    • Customer Ledger Entries
    • Vendor Ledger Entries
    • Detailed historical balances and transaction records
  • Historical Documents (if possible):
    • Posted Sales Invoices
    • Posted Purchase Invoices
    • Credit Memos
    • Other historical accounting documents with original document numbers, dates, and references

We understand that migrating complete historical transactions into Business Central can be challenging due to standard posting restrictions and audit considerations. However, we would like to understand the best practices followed by other partners and consultants.

Our specific questions are:

  1. Has anyone successfully migrated many years of QuickBooks historical transactions into Business Central SaaS?
  2. Which tools or migration solutions did you use?
  3. Are there any reliable third-party products that support this type of migration?
  4. Is it recommended to migrate all historical transactions, or is it better to migrate opening balances and keep QuickBooks available for historical reporting?
  5. If complete transaction migration is done, what is the recommended approach for maintaining data integrity, document references, and financial reporting accuracy?
  6. How do you handle historical posted invoices and other accounting documents in Business Central?

Any recommendations, lessons learned, best practices, or experiences with similar QuickBooks-to-Business Central migrations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your guidance.
