I call the bins on the Item Quantities Maintenance the "pointer bins" . They are a text field (no validation) that can be printed on documents or smartlists. Useful for recording the locations of products if they are kept in static locations. we have a lot of customers using this when they aren't ready for full GP multi-bin.

PS - the GP multi-bin would require every inventory transaction to select a bin (or have a default bin auto-selected). The inventory will then have bin quantities, and items can be kept in any (or all) bins.
