contact name not appearing in contact name field

On customer card when I select a contact in "Contact code" field, contact name is not appearing in "Contact name" field. There is a name for the contact on the contact card. Does anyone know the logic behind this? 
Contact name field is not editable as well.

    As the other users mentioned the contact type needs to be person. If its company the name will not display.

    Yes, the Contact should be a Person type of Contact record.
