Hi PS-24041818-0,
1) Issue
- An item with an active BOM and active Route/Route Version is converted into an Engineering Product using Engineering Change Management (ECM)
After conversion:
- The BOM is successfully visible (if created/linked) in the Engineering version
- However, the Route and Route Version are not copied or reflected in the Engineering version
- The Engineering version shows no route lines, even though a valid active route exists on the original item
- This creates inconsistency between BOM and Route availability in ECM
2) Reason
- In D365 SCM (ECM), conversion to Engineering Product does not automatically copy all production data
BOM and Route are handled differently:
- BOM may appear if explicitly created/assigned in the engineering version
- Route is not automatically inherited during conversion
- ECM requires:
- Independent definition of engineering-specific BOMs and Routes
- Version-controlled structures aligned with engineering versions
- Additionally:
- If no BOM is created in the engineering version, it will not display (as shown in the screenshot with “We didn’t find anything to show here”)
- Routes depend on:
- Engineering version context
- Site/legal entity applicability
- Proper creation or copying via ECM-specific processes
- Therefore, the absence of route data is expected standard behavior, not a system error
3) Resolution
- Create or assign the Route explicitly within the Engineering version:
- Navigate to Engineering version → Route
- Use “New route” or “Copy route” functionality to bring in the existing route
- Ensure the route is:
- Approved
- Activated
- Valid for the relevant site and date
- If required, link route creation to ECM process:
- Define engineering attribute-based rules or templates
- Use Engineering change orders (ECOs) to manage route structure
- Ensure BOM and Route are both maintained within the same engineering version
If expecting automatic inheritance:
- Validate whether customization exists, as this is not standard behavior
Best practice:
- Treat Engineering versions as independent controlled structures, requiring explicit setup of both BOM and Route
- Always verify both BOM and Route after conversion before releasing the Engineering product
For a more detailed answer, please provide more information.

Alexander
