How to migrate data from a local picklist to a Global Option Set

I am in the process of migrating CRM 4.0 to 2011.

There are many picklists that are repeated on multiple entities and I would to use the new functionality "Global Option Set" to better manage these lists.

For each entity, so we will have to migrate the data from the local Picklist to the field that references the Global Option Set on all records. However I can not create a workflow to achieve this task.

What is the procedure I should follow  in order to use "Global Option Sets" and retrieve data from the picklists they will replace ?

Thank you in advance for your cooperation

    Hi Guido,

    Thanks for your answer.

When I read the linked page, I find that what is proposed as the main solution is to use a workflow to copy the values from the local optionset to global optionset for all the records of the entity.

However the CRM 2011 workflow does not allow it and allow only copy data between two fields related to the same global Optionset.

This is indicated in the following link : community.dynamics.com/.../crm-2011-option-set-mapping-in-workflows.aspx

correct me if I'm wrong. If not, how could I do ?

Thank's in advance for your cooperation.

If it were me, I would create your global option set, then create the reference field from your entity (i.e. picklist on a lead which references the global option set) and then display both the old (original) field and the new field in the same view Then sort and bulk edit your way through. Now you could theoretically create a workflow: if old field = value a, then update new field to value a. In that way you could update as many as 250 records at a time. Just hit me/us back if you have additional questions, or if it doesn't work the way we intended. It should work though.

    Thank's Brian for your reply.

I have not tried it yet but it certainly will work. I don't know how I did not think of that.

    Thank you Guido and Brian.

I had a similar issue and created a tool to do this for me.  It's on codeplex:
