SmartList Designer - Import into Another Company in the Same Environment

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi:

I don't use SmartList Designer that often, as I usually use SmartList Builder.

It's kind of a long story, as to why.  But, I need to have a SmartList that I just created in SmartList Designer to be imported into a different company in the same environment and afterward modify its calculated field in that other company.

But, it appears that the "Export" button for SmartList Designer is only for exporting its XML file into another environment instead of another company within the same environment.

Is it possible to import the XML file into a different company as a different SmartList?  Or, would I have to perhaps import the XML file into my own local GP install, make the changes to the calculated field, export it to a new XML file, and then import the changed SmartList into that other company?

Or, could I export the XML file and instead open it in Notepad, change the name of the SmartList in Notepad, import it into the other company afterward, and then make the modifications?

Thanks!

John

    Hi John,

You are exactly right in your logic here.  SmartLists are saved in the DYNAMICS database and then security for access to them can be set at the company level.  Because they are saved at the DYNAMICS level we can't have 2 with the same name and different calculated fields in the same environment.  You would have to rename it in order to import it back into the same environment even if its a different company and change the calculated field.

Brining it into your own system and renaming it is the best solution, as editing it in NotePad wouldn't be a supported solution, but you could certainly try it.

    I hope this helps!
