Splitting Case Calculations

I have a few questions regarding splitting cases. I am in the seafood industry and have setup a frozen shrimp item in D365 as a Case. That case has 10x 5lb boxes inside of it. So i have set that up as a unit conversion as well. If my on-hand inventory is 10 cs when I put in a sales order for 2 boxes i expect to be able to pick list and register a pick for 2 boxes and after invoicing I expect my inventory on hand to be 9cs and 8 bx. Why doesnt it function in this manner. When I tried to register a pick list today for 2 bx it wouldnt even let me pick the bx that were on the sale sorder it would only allow me to pick cases. I want to give my sales people the flexibility to sell both boxes and cases.

I have the same question (0)

I also want to followup this up with a pricing question. Why cant I cant buy cases of frozen shrimp and price then buy the lb unit of measure. My 20 year erp system does this with ease. Why is this custom? In the seafood industry most things are ultimately priced by the lb of measure on purchase order lines and on the sales order lines. For example we buy 300 cases of frozen shrimp (50 lbs per cs) at $7/lb and that is exactly how it displays on the purchase order line and then it does the math and extends out the total. 300*50*$7/lb =$105,000

Why is this such a difficult concept to grasp ordering buy one unit of measure and pricing by another. When you sell a bx or cs of frozen shrimp to a customer at a restaurant they want to know the price per lb that they are being charged. They dont want to hear that a bx is $35 they want us to tell them that the price is $7/lb and then we will confirm with them that they want a 5 lb box or a 50 lb cs.

Stay calm and use catch weight: your sales unit and inventory unit becomes the LBS, while the catch weight unit would be CS.

The below introduction even describes your business case in your business terms, they even refer to shrimps :)

    docs.microsoft.com/.../catch-weight

With regards to your first question, the advance warehouse mobile scanner let the user choose picking units as long as they are present in the Unit sequence group and have unit conversions between every unique pair of UoMs. You seem to be referring to the traditional picking list; its functional abilities may be limited, but at lease the catch weight is supported too. What the traditional picking list does NOT support is a selector CS vs. BX.

P.S. This is even a better introduction: www.axpulse.com/.../catch-weight-functionality-in-microsoft-dynamics-ax-2012-r3

Eugene, thank you for the quick response. I can use catchweight to setup the CD unit (with a variance of 0) because the case is 50 lbs fixed weight and the BX are 5lb fixed weight. (In other words they will not vary). That works fine and prices it by the lb perfectly but when you setup a catchweight in D365 and add unit conversions and go it the sales line it will not allow you to sell the lower unit of measure. It only allows to put the CS unit on the sales line. It appears catchweighted cases are limited to one unit of measure and I want my sales people to have the ability to sell boxes and cases with the same item code.

And with regard to the picking of boxes I was solely referring to due the basic pick and pack natively through D365. I don't see any are where I can change the unit to boxes why would I even have to if my sales order is in for bx.

Correct, this is what I mentioned in my reply: the selection between 2 case sizes is not offered by the classic picking UI but at the WHS mobile device only.

Why would you only be able to pick the correct ordered quantity an UOM with advanced wms turned on and not natively in the IU. Is that a bug? Why would you (the system) default the pick to anything but the ordered quantity and unit of measure?

Can you model the catchweight example and tell me if I am doing something wrong?

What's the point of setting up lower unit of measure conversions for an item code  if I cant pick it or sell them. Could that be a bug as well?

They are going to tell you it's "by design". You must be doing everything right, the Catch weight unit of measure is the only one and cannot be changed order by order.

Ok just so we are clear and I'd like a comment by the moderator or microsoft personnel if possible. I want to summarize everything.

If an item is marked catchweight in D365 F&O you cannot create workable unit of measure conversions to be sold. It will allow you to create the conversion but you cannot enter the other unit of measures on the sales order lines or purchase order lines. Therefore in catchweight per item you are limited to 1 unit of measure.

If an item is not catchweight in D365 F&O you can create workable unit of measure conversions but the system cannot price the unit by the lb unit at the sales order entry or PO line level. (You can only do that if its marked catchweight).

Also if you create an additional unit of measure conversion like box for a non catchweighted item you cannot pick the box unit of measure (that is on a sales order and it defaults to picking cases only) natively through the pick and pack IU.

However if you are using the advanced wms scanning you can pick the boxes that are on the sales order line.

Microsoft, please confirm and add any comments. Again, all I'm trying to do is be able to sell boxes and cases on the sales order and purchase order lines and price them by the lb unit of measure using the same item code. If you guys can fix this you will have the entire seafood industry waiting to implement your product.

Eugene thank you very much for your feedback.

<cynicism> FYI: this is not an official forum, they are not obliged to give any comments. And in general, a typical Microsoft soldier could not care less about the seafood industry: they are measured by lines of code per hour or yearly sales quota. </cynicism>

The seafood industry as a whole is a billion dollar market. Microsoft is in business to provide solutions at the enterprise level. If they make these small changes it would give them a more comprehensive solution that would vastly increase there licensing revenue. Why wouldn't they want to make it priority if there is an entire market share out there they are just needing the ability to split a catch weighted unit of measure. To your point the coding it would take would be minuscule to the huge amount of revenue that they would stand to gain by making this work properly. They understand the catchweight concept all they have to do is code it to enable it to use unit of measure conversions.

And lastly I will ask again what is the point of making a unit of measure conversion for a non catchweight item and not allowing the system to process an order for that smaller unit of measure through the native pick and pack IU.

If they have the unit of measure conversion in place they know that customers are going to want to sell the lower units of measure why is the functionality there if it cant be used. This seems like a glaring bug.

Also Eugen I really appreciate your wanting to help if you feel i should be posting this in a different forum provide me the link to appropriate one and I will do so.
