Question on Dynamics AX 7's cloud infrastructure

I understand AX 7 can come into a few deployment options, on-premise, Azure or mixed.

As a partner I am currently doing some feasibility studies for our clients. I have personally tried the local demo VM version, as well as deploying a demo cloud version in LCS.

For the cloud version, there is a VM for me to connect from the 'Environment' in LCS. Inside the VM I will find the necessary components of AX 7 such as SQL Server, IIS etc.

For the 'production' instance (real subscription), it is going to be 'Microsoft-managed' as I heard Azure SQL will be used, my question is whether we would still have access to any VM as the demo cloud version above? If so, what is the VM used for? This is related to making clear of the infrastructure and evaluating some integration options with external systems.

Anyone has information or experience to share is well appreciated, thanks.

    Hi Johnny,

About the deployment options, AX7 is today (Sept. 2016) Azure cloud only for production environments. The local VMs are to be used for development and demo. Also today there is no mixed option.

Can you explain your questions related to the production instance? What VM are you referring to and what access would you expect? For AX on Azure you don't have to think about the infrastructure as the AX license includes all components to run AX. Microsoft is taking care of it.

    Hi André,

    Thanks for your reply.

In a technology-wise perspective, some of the external systems relied file integration where a shared network drive is used as the medium, some systems may expect AX itself could provide a shared network drive on its own VM, but this doesn't seem to be an option viable for AX7, probably we need to setup another VM within the same Azure network for this purpose.

You don't have access to VMs used by production environments, nor you can add any VMs to the subscription, because it's all owned and managed by Microsoft.

Nevertheless you can easily write an app (running in your system) that that reads file from a shared drive and push them into AX via a web service.
