Non-stocked service items on project item journals

Hello, I am wondering if it is at all possible to add a non-stocked service item to a project item journal? When we open up an item journal and go in to select an item, no non-stocked service items seem to show up. Is this by design? Or is there a setting that we may have missed that would allow us to select a non-stocked service item?

Similarly, we are not able to post service orders with non-stocked service items added to the service order lines. We get the error "An item cannot be added to an inventory journal if it is associated with an item model group where the attribute Stocked product is not selected."

Again, wondering if this is by design, or is there a setting somewhere that would allow us to get around this?

Thanks in advance!

Austin

I believe the item journal is for "real physical items" per design. If you want to charge a project or a service order then do it from item requirements.

E.g. on a service order go to Dispatch - Item requirements. Here you can add service items and post, thus charging the service order.

Item requirements then need to be part of "scope for invoice update later on".

Thank you for the response, that is what I feared. Not sure I fully understand why this is the case, that you cannot add non-stocked service items to a service order line, but we will just have to come up with a different process.

    Thanks!

I agree that not been able to add non stocked items directly to a service order line probably could be an "unneccesary" limitation. You could raise a ticket at MS about it? But yes, you can add such items (charging the order with the cost) through item requirements.

Hey, This is part of the standard design. I guess the reason why they have enabled this for stocked items is when you purchase a non stocked item, it gets expensed.

So inorder to arrive at the actual cost of the item to the project, it should be a stocked item.

This must be the logic behind it.

    Hi,

I believe it works if you use items of type "service". In this case we have the item associated to an item model group that is not stocked and I am able to select it in the item journal without problem. Not sure that is the path you want to go down but thought I would recommend it. Thanks!

Thank you for the response, Joseph. Have you made any customizations around this at all? We ultimately came to the conclusion that by stock AX functionality, a non-stocked service item simply cannot be added to an item journal. Curious how you are getting around that. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Austin,

I apologize I think I was looking at items that in fact were stocked. It looks like you may only be able to use the item requirements form to input service transactions onto your projects (or an actual sales order). Good luck!
