AX in Azure SQL (SQL as a service)

Hi there,

This is my first question in this community. I am usually busy installing and configuration AX2009/2012R3 for our customers but this is not my primary role.

Internally we have an hybrid environment between on-premises and azure and hybrid synchronization with AD-Connect so we have already for a while DEV AX environments running over azure and it works good.  Now I am thinking about the possibility to start to use Azure SQL databases (PAAS) instead of an SQL VM running over azure. I believe this is not possible yet?. Does someone have tried it?. Is there any way to install the AX database component when you don't have a SQL server or could I do it in another way?

I understand there are a lot of changes in AX7, but I don't know if Microsoft is only going to offer it as a IAAS via LCS as they are doing now. Or we will have a possibility to install it as PAAS, using some of the Azure existing services as the Azure SQL databases?

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/data-management-azure-sql-database-and-sql-server-iaas/

thank you in advance for your help!

AX 7 already uses Azure SQL. AX 2012 can't.

Martin, could you please develop your answer a little bit?.

When I am deploying AX7 over LCS, I can only deploy it over azure creating IAAS azure VM's, not using the SQL database PAAS.

You seem to be mixing several things together. That the IIS is running in a normal VM doesn't mean that AX 7 isn't using SQL Azure. Or maybe you're looking at a development environment, which uses a local SQL, but that's a completely different topic.

Martin, maybe I missing something, but when I deploy AX7 from LCS, it creates one or two azure VM's, one of them stores the SQL databases, but it doesn't create a SQL database service over azure. I didn't mention anything about IIS

Actually, you are right I am deploying a DEV environment... I believe that's why I don't see it. Thank you

When we talk about AX running cloud-only, using SQL Azure, being completely handled by Microsoft (without any access to VMs by customers or partners) and so on, it's all about production environments.

My AX 7 development environment on my desk obviously isn't in cloud, it isn't managed by Microsoft and I would be really unhappy if it stored all data in an Azure DB accessed through internet.

Development environments use SQL Server 2016; production environments use SQL Azure.

Thank you for the info. Are there people already running AX7 in production?

Yes, some customers implemented AX 7 in Technology Adoption Program. I believe that Microsoft talked about ten customers at the time of RTW.

    Hi,

We are buying licenses for D365 for operations and are implementing AX 2012. Can we use Azure sql as a service for our production & dev environments instead of taking SQL VMs?
