Where do we find data dictionary and documentation on these entities, the fields, the data types, etc  and the naming conventions? including relationships and how the data is populated specifically as an order moves thru the various steps-- order-ship-invoice-returns and partial shipments. some examples and how to deal with sales order archive data if is enabled.

RE: documentation for BC ONLINE odata entities in power bi get data

I have been reviewing the data dictionary for the ON PREMISES table version-- somewhat helpful. BC ONLINE version- the odata (power bi GET DATA) is the important one for me which is not documented and the naming conventions not explained (at least that i can find so far). I am interested in pulling large data extractions for many companies in a consolidated manner. this data would drive advanced analytics and ai/ml modeling as well. i am not doing a custom entry form for 1 record where the api would be useful.

do you want me to send the link to the data dictionary for on-prem version i found?

thanks for connecting on this-- your help is appreciated and respected.

All I can add is that the BC API provides a guarantee of the entities specified within. If one of the entities is changed the release will come with an API version increment with the previous version being supported for a number of years (I think I heard two years from somewhere?)

There was someone creating ER diagrams but doesn't look like it's being maintained anymore: dynamicsdocs.com/.../w1

    thank you for the info-

this remains a mystery.of undocumented work which makes it very  inefficient and risky to devote work and make new feature and software assets on assumptions that the current observations i find would persist.

we need to get documentation from product group.

i am a partner and have documented what i have found which is populated over the workflow, but am not confident it will persist moving forward.

any suggestions on how to obtain documentation or design docs with some version relationships?

i think it is not a best practice to rely on reverse engineering things.

    Hi Tim,

I think the closest thing you're going to find to entity documentation is the BC API reference. The standard Power BI  Business Central connector uses this API: docs.microsoft.com/.../

You won't find any in depth documentation on data flow within BC, you'll most likely need to work with a partner if you need this knowledge but you could review the training material and check the data after each step: docs.microsoft.com/.../

The page inspector is useful for viewing all fields on a table, even those not show on a page: docs.microsoft.com/.../across-inspect-page

    Hope that helps,

    Dan

    Hello,

I do not think that Microsoft has something available.  So I will leave this to the partner community.

    Thanks.
