BOM item cost

Is there a way to NOT carry the cost of an item that is on your BOM to the production order? for example I have an item that is a tool that has a value in my system. I would like to use it on my BOM for a production order but I don't want to charge the order for the cost of that item.

    Hi bcox74,

Are you consuming or using the tool? Can you elaborate? Have you also considered using resources?

we are using the tool on the production order and than we are returning it to stock after the order is reported as finished. I have two lines on my BOM one as a positive and one as a negative. the cost is carrying into the order but not back out when the tool is returned. I'm sure its a setting that I'm missing.

    thank you

OK. I understand your process now. Have you entered a cost price on the item card or on the BOM journal for the return?

Its not letting me add a cost to the return because its ending the picking list when I report as finished. how would I add a cost price to the item card? I would like if the item had a cost in inventory but not pull to my production order when added to my BOM.

You could hold it twice with e.g. a variant code- one item holds the value  - the other is a virtual item that you put on the bom with zero cost.

Or maybe expense it on receipt and hold in inventory at zero value and put the value into FA.

Or  make it a standard cost item and have plus and minus lines for it on your BOM and the net cost is zero.

Could you just clarify how you are posting the return if you are saying the picking list is ended at RAF?

the line that I have as the negative item on my BOM has a flushing principle as Finish.  so when I report as finished it creates a return pick list but the end box is checked on the journal.

So if the item has a cost it will not be put back into stock at zero. What is your costing method and how have you defined the items cost?

when the item is received into stock it pulled the cost of the item inform the PO. so for this test item it is $10.00/ea. I have the item setup in the test environment as an Average cost item. I agree it should have returned it at the cost that it was consumed in at. so because I have the item setup as an average cost item when it goes in at $0 it than messes with my average cost on the item in stock. I would much rather it didn't pull in any cost.

Set the item cost on the released product to 10, make sure the update cost is ticked. However I would not want a cost, I would create a zero cost item  different to the purchased one and use that as the tool.
