Customer is on GP 2015 14.00.0725 (R2) trying to upgrade to GP 2018 in a DEV environment. I can launch GP successfully in DEV before starting any upgrade processes so I know I have a solid starting point for the upgrade. When I try to apply the service pack to get them to a GP version that is supported to upgrade directly to GP 2018, I'm getting an error for which I can find no help. I have tried applying the following service packs:
In all three cases the service pack starts to run but within about 20 seconds shows the following error:
Failed to find node: //configuration/addins/DynamicsGPSvc in XML file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2015\Dynamics.exe.config. system error: -2147020584
The service pack then rolls back and doesn't complete. I've compared the file listed in the error message between our DEV and PROD environments and they match exactly. And I reviewed the file in an XML editor and the node that is said to be missing actually does exist in the file.
I've completely many GP upgrades over the years and I almost feel gas-lighted here because it should be working exactly as it has in the past but it's not. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Wonderful things happen when dealing with GP. The weekends are the only time we can get work done.
Here are two upgrade paths to GP 18.3.1200. If you can get your GP 2013 to GP 2016 16.00.0716 you can get there directly. Or you at least need to get to GP 18.00.0496 to complete the trip.

Wow...what are the chances we both encountered this on the same day (on a Saturday!) and both hit this forum? Thank you for the insights. FYI I did have GP 2016 and GP 2018 installed so I uninstalled both of them, deleted the corresponding application folders and tried again but got the same error. I decided to reboot the server (couldn't hurt) and was then successful at applying KB4528415 - US YE 11/28/2019 - 14.00.1230.
From my read of the GP 2018 upgrade compatibility pages, I should be able to go from 14.00.1230 to 18.00.0400. From there I would upgrade to GP 18.3. I was previously getting an error when trying to upgrade to GP 2018 RTM (18.00.0400) with the message that upgrading from 14.00.1230 was not supported for product ID 0, 309 and whatever smartlist is. If you know of any flaws in my logic I'd love to hear them. I've done a lot of upgrades but don't do 2015 to 2018 very often. Thanks again for your assistance!
This is fascinating as I just had this happen this morning for a client and, I too, had never seen this before with all the decades of upgrades I have done. In this case on the server had a previous installation of GP 2018. The current version was GP 18.2.1036. It turns out the service installation was looking for the Dynamics.exe.config in the GP 2018 folder which had since been removed. I went to Add/Remove programs and uninstalled GP 2018 leaving just GP. After doing this the GP service pack ran fine. I would check to see what is installed on this server and what GP folders remain.
