WAI vs TWAIN scanner drivers for Document Attach - Scan feature

I have a client that wants to use the new Document Attach - Scan feature released in 2013 R2, however I noticed it only works with WAI connected scanners. 
I'm not well versed in scanner/printer drivers, but from what I can tell WAI is not widely used or accepted and my clients existing Cannon scanners are not compatible. 

Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone know if there is an application that can convert the standard TWAIN driver into a WAI that GP will accept?
