Are Woodford/Resco Mandatory or Optional for Field Service Mobile ?

Hi

I am starting to learn about Field Service, and I would like to clarify if Woodford & Project Template (Resco) are exactly mandatory or just optional to have better functionality for the Field Service mobile app ... Thanks
I have the same question (0)

I actually dont know if its mandatory to actually download the Microsoft project template and use it. Maybe someone from Microsoft could confirm this.

If I were to guess it would be highly recomended to use the official project template and not to create your own.

I know that Microsoft fix bugs and add features to the newer versions of the projects. docs.microsoft.com/.../field-service-version-history-mobile

    Hi Carlos,

As Thomas mentions, it's not mandatory but there is a difference i.e. if you are using "Dynamics Field Service" Mobile App, then you have to use the Woodford project (template) created by Microsoft and the below works you through the installation process:

How to install Dynamics 365 Field Service
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/field-service/install-field-service#download-the-field-service-mobile-app-on-a-phone-or-tablet

This article https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/field-service/mobile-upgrade-project discusses the mobile project template and upgrading it:

Dynamics 365 Field Service comes with a mobile project template that can determine how the Field Service Mobile app should look and function. For example, it has default views and forms for work orders, as well as logic that runs when a work order is saved. It also has customizations for various Field Service entities like bookings, customer assets, and so on. You can build on top of the mobile project template to edit the mobile app for your specific business needs.

Periodically, Microsoft releases a new mobile project template when the Field Service Mobile app is updated. Latest Field Service Project can be downloaded from:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/field-service/install-field-service#download-the-field-service-mobile-app-on-a-phone-or-tablet

    https://aka.ms/fsmobile-project

And as Thomas mentioned, version history and fix list is here:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/field-service/version-history#mobile-project-file-library

If you're using Resco Mobile App and not the Field Service Mobile app, then I provide the following which discusses Resco App projects which would need to be used with the Resco Mobile App:
    https://docs.resco.net/wiki/App_projects

    Hope this helps Carlos.

    Cheers,

    Allan

Thanks Allan, I have been working with the reference links that you indicate and precisely these links indicate the use of Woodford configurator and the project template that is downloaded from Resco (now I´m using in its free version for 30 days), my question is precisely if I could exactly use Field Service Mobile
but without using Woodford and the Resco Project template, I do not see much logic that the Field Service Mobile app (Microsoft) does not speak directly with Dynamics 365 Field Service (Microsoft) and you have to pay an additional license for the project template to a third party (in this case Resco ), which would be an additional cost to the license being paid by Dynamics 365 Field Service (which includes the use of Field Service Mobile). I hope I have expressed my concern in the best way. Thank you very much for your kind attention and dedicated response.

Hi Carlos, just to clarify from a licensing perspective: If you have a "Customer Engagement Plan" or "Field Service App" license, you basically have two options:

    1) You are entitled to use the FS Mobile app (documentation in Allan's links). You download Woodford from the Resco website and the latest Woodford project from the MS link above. Within 30 days you need to activate Woodford: https://aka.ms/fsmlicense (no extra cost). I'd strongly encourage you to use the FS project template as it has a lot of best practice built in (it also reproduces some of the FS server-side logic). Don't modify the project, instead derive a child and alter that one. Using that approach you can update the MS master project and still keep your changes. Lastly, you are not entitled to use Resco's app, this requires a separate Resco license.

    2) You are also allowed to use Microsoft's 1st party mobile app: docs.microsoft.com/.../mobile-2020-power-platform No need for Woodford, all configuration in the "normal" Power Apps maker experience, however there are still functional gaps. Have a look at the "Implementation and migration guidance" section.

No, it is not mandatory to use that template but if you use it, it will benefit you a lot.

If you use it, your content would look more better in the mobile app.

The Woodford template is more useful if you create a mobile app.

Alexander, CJustin, thanks for the answers, I think they already clarify the picture for me. Just an additional question for Alexander, I understand then that for "Customer Engagement Plan" or "Field Service App", Woodford licenses and Project template (FSDyn365_1.0.4549 in my case) are included at no cost for the 30-day trial version and also at no cost after the 30-day trial version (after activation within 30 days of testing) .... Question: What about if I did not perform this activation within 30 days of testing?

Can I still activate without cost or what should I do ? Thanks.

Hi Carlos, no worries, you paid for it! :-) If I remember correctly, if Woodford is not activated after 30 days, you can still run it but not publish your project. Even if Woodford wouldn't start anymore, you can activate it at any time, should take no more than 24 hours.

Thanks Alexander, all the information has been very useful for me, I consider my concern has been resolved.

I have an additional separate question (I do not know if in this case it is convenient to generate a new post or if it is ok here):

If I am going to have for example 1 Dispatcher, 1 Administrator with the application of Dynamics Field Service and I will have around of 30 Field Technicians who "Only" will use Field Service Mobile, for these field technicians do I have to pay 30 "Base Licenses" of Field Service 30x US$ 95/month? Or can thay classify as "Attach Licenses" 30xUS$ 20/month..(which would sound more reasonable) ?, or would you apply some other pricing scheme?. Thanks a lot.

Hi Carlos, here is how the attach model works: Every full user must have a Base license. Users requiring multiple core Business Applications may purchase as many Attach SKUs as needed at a reduced price. In other words: An Attach license requires a Base license (to attach it to).

That means your 30 techs will need the FS App license. FS Attach would only work if they already had a base, such as sales or service.

P.S. If your issue is resolved, please mark the answer(s) as verified for the benefit of others.
